Tulisa is a British singer<\/a>, songwriter, and actress<\/a>.\u00a0 Tulisa shot to international fame in 2012, when she released her debut single titled \u2018Young.\u2019\u00a0 The track achieved enormous success, peaking at the top spot on the \u2018UK Singles Chart.\u2019\u00a0 As a key member of the popular British hip hop band \u2018N-Dubz,\u2019 Tulisa has secured a gold-certified album, couple of platinum-certified albums, three silver certified singles, five MOBO awards, and nominations at several award shows.\u00a0 As an actress and television personality, she has appeared in a couple of feature films and television shows like \u2018 Demons Never Die\u2019 and \u2018The Xtra Factor\u2019 (spin-off).<\/p>\n

Her Early Life<\/h2>\n

Tulisa was born as Tula Paulinea Contostavloshe on July 13, 1988, in Camden, North West London, England.\u00a0 She was born into a family of musicians as her mother, Ann Byrne, was one of the members of a musical group named \u2018Jeep.\u2019\u00a0 While Ann\u2019s sisters completed the musical group, her brothers Brian and Mick Byrne were part of a pop-folk group called \u2018Emmet Spiceland.\u2019\u00a0 Tulisa\u2019s father, Plato Contostavlos, was one of the members of \u2018Mungo Jerry,\u2019 a rock group that reached its peak in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n

Tulisa had an inclination towards music from the very beginning.\u00a0 Family rendezvous would often turn into musical concerts with almost everyone taking an active part in it.\u00a0 Music played an important role in Tulisa\u2019s childhood and she acknowledges that her mother\u2019s music continues to influence her singing.\u00a0 Her mother\u2019s illness had a major influence on Tulisa\u2019s childhood.\u00a0 Suffering from schizoaffective disorder from the time she was in her late teens, Ann Byrne gradually developed bipolar disorder and was sectioned under the 1983 \u2018Mental Health Act\u2019 when Tulisa was just five years old.\u00a0 This had a direct consequence on Tulisa\u2019s upbringing, which forced her to find solace in alcohol and drugs.<\/p>\n

Tulisa\u2019s career started when she was still fairly young.\u00a0 She got into a music group called \u2018N-Dubz\u2019 when her cousin Dappy, who was a member of \u2018N-Dubz,\u2019 invited her to be a part of the group.\u00a0 As part of \u2018N-Dubz,\u2019 Tulisa started performing in and around Camden during her early teens.\u00a0 In 2005, the group released its first music video titled \u2018Everyday Of My Life,\u2019 which became popular among music lovers.<\/p>\n

Tulisa got to perform a solo song for \u2018N-Dubz\u2019 in 2009 when the music group came up with its second album, \u2018Against All Odds.\u2019\u00a0 The album, which peaked at number six on \u2018UK Album Chart,\u2019 received platinum certification within two months of its release.<\/p>\n

Her Solo Career<\/h2>\n

In 2012, Tulisa announced that she was working on her solo album.\u00a0 After releasing a couple of singles, her debut solo album titled \u2018The Female Boss\u2019 was released on December 3, 2012.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the album received negative reviews from the critics and performed poorly on music charts.<\/p>\n

Tulisa was part of a six-part documentary series titled \u2018Being… N-Dubz,\u2019 which premiered on \u20184Music\u2019 on June 21, 2010.\u00a0 However, this was not Tulisa\u2019s first acting stint as she had earlier appeared in a TV series titled \u2018Dubplate Drama,\u2019 in which she played Laurissa, a singer who suffers from cocaine addiction.\u00a0 She then appeared in a straight-to-DVD comedy film titled \u2018Big Fat Gypsy Gangster,\u2019 which released in 2011.\u00a0 She made her big-screen debut in the same year when she played Amber Johnson in the British slasher film, \u2018Demons Never Die.\u2019<\/p>\n

Tulisa received her big breakthrough on May 30, 2011, when she was signed to appear as one of the judges in the eighth series of the famous reality TV music competition, \u2018The X Factor.\u2019\u00a0 In the show, Tulisa mentored music groups, such as \u2018The Risk,\u2019 \u2018Nu Vibe,\u2019 \u20182 Shoes,\u2019 and \u2018Little Mix.\u2019\u00a0 \u2018Little Mix\u2019 went on to become the most successful girl group in the history of the reality series.\u00a0 Thanks to her success as a mentor and judge, Tulisa was once again invited to be a part of the judging panel for the show\u2019s ninth season in 2012.\u00a0 This time around, she mentored a group called \u2018Girls,\u2019 which had singers like Lucy Spraggan, Ella Henderson, and Jade Ellis.<\/p>\n

Tulisa overcame depression, an eating disorder, and two suicide attempts as a teenager.<\/p>\n
