Elsa Ben\u00edtez is a Mexican model<\/a> and TV personality best known for lighting up the pages of the Sports Illustrated<\/a> Swimsuit Issue, including scoring the coveted cover in 2001.\u00a0 \u00a0She\u2019s also dabbled in acting, with appearances in Le retour d’Ars\u00e8ne Lupin (1989), Enrique Iglesias\u2019 music video Love to See You Cry (2002), and as the host of Mexico’s Next Top Model starting in 2009.\u00a0 In short, she\u2019s done a little bit of everything and looked incredibly amazing doing it.<\/p>\n

Her Early Life<\/h2>\n

Elsa Ben\u00edtez was born on December 8, 1977, in Hermosillo\u2014the sunny capital of Sonora in northwest Mexico, just about an hour from the Gulf of California.\u00a0 Growing up, she looked up to \u201980s supermodel Linda Evangelista, dreaming of one day following in her glamorous footsteps.<\/p>\n

By the time she was a young adult, Elsa had reached a statuesque 5’10” and was turning heads.\u00a0 In 1995, she won a model search competition in Costa Rica, and things took off from there.\u00a0 She started booking gigs across Latin America and soon signed with Elite Model Management\u2014the legendary agency founded by John Casablancas and later run by none other than Evangelista\u2019s husband, Gerald Marie.\u00a0 Talk about a full-circle moment.<\/p>\n

Elsa Ben\u00edtez first made waves in the European fashion scene, and her rising career got a serious boost when legendary photographer Steven Meisel took notice.\u00a0 In 1996, she landed not one, but three covers of Italian Vogue\u2014a huge deal in the modeling world.\u00a0 That same year, she became a favorite of designers Dolce & Gabbana, walking in their spring\/summer Milan shows.\u00a0 Designer Stefano Gabbana even told The Observer that Elsa “embodies the Mediterranean woman”\u2014clearly, she made quite the impression.<\/p>\n

In 1999, Elsa Ben\u00edtez married former pro basketball player Rony Seikaly.\u00a0 The couple welcomed a daughter, Mila, in 2003, but later divorced in 2005.\u00a0 She went on to have a brief romance with Mexican businessman Roberto Slim and, in 2007, began dating producer Valerio Morabito.\u00a0 These days, Elsa calls sunny Santa Monica, California home.<\/p>\n

Throughout her career, Elsa racked up plenty of memorable moments.\u00a0 She appeared in the 1999 Pirelli Calendar, styled as a \u201870s \u201cgroovy\u201d girl as part of the calendar\u2019s tribute to fashion through the decades.\u00a0 In 2002, she turned heads in Enrique Iglesias\u2019 music video Love to See You Cry, and she\u2019s also walked the runway for Victoria\u2019s Secret\u2014because of course she has.<\/p>\n

One of Elsa\u2019s most chilling stories came in the 2004 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, where she shared a near-miss with tragedy.\u00a0 She was supposed to board TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996, but something didn\u2019t feel right. \u201cI got to the airport and I just had a bad feeling,\u201d<\/em> she recalled. \u201cI started crying, and I couldn’t stop.\u201d<\/em> After calling her husband and trusting her gut, she changed flights, leaving just 10 minutes after Flight 800 took off. That plane later crashed. \u201cIt made me appreciate so much that just being alive is a gift,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n
