Her Early Life<\/h2>\n

Kali Uchis was born Karly Marina Loaiza on July 17, 1994, in Alexandria, Virginia, to a Colombian father and an American mother.\u00a0 Her parents met in the late \u201980s, and when Kali was in high school, her father moved back to Colombia.\u00a0 She split her time between both worlds: school-year life with her mom and siblings in Virginia, and summers in Pereira with her dad\u2019s side of the family.<\/p>\n

In high school, Kali learned piano and saxophone, joined the jazz band, and developed a love for creating things \u2014 especially in the photo lab, where she\u2019d disappear to make experimental short films instead of, you know, going to class.\u00a0 Her passion for photography eventually led her to design cover art for mixtapes.<\/p>\n

The skipping-class habit (plus ignoring curfew) eventually got her kicked out of the house, and she spent a period living out of her car.\u00a0 Instead of spiraling, she turned it into a creative boot camp: writing songs on a small keyboard, crafting poetry, and piecing together what would become her debut mixtape, Drunken Babble (2012).<\/p>\n

At the time, she wasn\u2019t even trying to be a singer \u2014 she wanted to be a filmmaker, not front-and-center talent.\u00a0 But life had other plans. Friends called her \u201cKarluchis,\u201d which she later transformed into the now-iconic stage name Kali Uchis.\u00a0 A little chaotic?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 And definitely the origin story of an artist who was always destined to create her own lane.<\/p>\n

Career Journey<\/h2>\n

Right after graduating, Kali released her debut mixtape Drunken Babble on August 1, 2012 \u2014 a project so all-over-the-map (in the best way) that critics called it \u201cgenre-defying.\u201d\u00a0 It pulled from doo-wop, reggae, and early-2000s R&B, basically announcing: I don\u2019t do boxes.\u00a0 In 2014, she hopped on Snoop Dogg\u2019s mixtape That\u2019s My Work 3 with the track \u201cOn Edge,\u201d because apparently Snoop knows talent when he hears it.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Kali dropped her first EP, Por Vida, first as a free download and later on iTunes.\u00a0 The project featured production from Diplo, Tyler, The Creator, Kaytranada, and BadBadNotGood \u2014 a lineup that screams \u201ccool kids only.\u201d\u00a0 That same year, she hit the road for the first time, touring with Leon Bridges across the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n

By 2017, Kali was officially everywhere.\u00a0 She appeared on multiple tracks on Gorillaz\u2019s album Humanz, including \u201cShe\u2019s My Collar,\u201d plus bonus tracks on the deluxe editions.\u00a0 She then announced her first North American headlining tour, kicking off at Outside Lands and stopping at Pop Montreal.\u00a0 That August, she released \u201cNuestro Planeta\u201d featuring Reykon as another single from her upcoming album.<\/p>\n

Awards started rolling in too: she earned a Latin Grammy nomination (Record of the Year) for \u201cEl Ratico\u201d with Juanes, and a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance for \u201cGet You\u201d with Daniel Caesar.<\/p>\n

In April 2020, she released the EP To Feel Alive, recorded entirely alone during lockdown \u2014 because if anyone was going to make isolation sound dreamy, it was Kali Uchis.\u00a0 Earlier that February, she made a cameo in Thundercat\u2019s gloriously chaotic \u201cDragonball Durag\u201d music video.<\/p>\n

Then came the global takeover. Thanks to a TikTok lip-sync trend, \u201cTelepat\u00eda\u201d from her second studio album blew up in early 2021.\u00a0 Before it was even officially a single, it cracked the top 10 on Billboard\u2019s Hot Latin Songs chart, eventually hitting #1. On Spotify, it climbed to #3 on the U.S. Top 50 and #2 globally \u2014 proving the world loves a bilingual fantasy moment.<\/p>\n

In July 2023, she teased a \u201cnew era\u201d with \u201cMu\u00f1ekita,\u201d featuring El Alfa and JT from City Girls as the first taste of her next album.\u00a0 In 2024, she announced Orqu\u00eddeas Parte 2, releasing it on August 9.<\/p>\n

By early 2025, she was featured on \u201cDamn Right\u201d by Jennie (from BLACKPINK), alongside Childish Gambino \u2014 casual.\u00a0 On March 17, 2025, she revealed the title of her fifth studio album, Sincerely, which dropped on May 9. The lead single \u201cSunshine & Rain\u2026\u201d\u00a0 was announced via TikTok and released March 27 with a music video two days later.\u00a0 The second single, \u201cILYSMIH,\u201d arrived on April 25.\u00a0 And because she stays booked and creating, she released Sincerely: P.S., a deluxe edition with five extra tracks, on October 3, 2025.<\/p>\n
