Sloane Stephens is an American professional tennis player who plays with the kind of athleticism that makes you tired just watching her.\u00a0 She burst into the global spotlight by winning the 2017 US Open \u2014 casually taking home one of the biggest titles in the sport \u2014 and followed it up by climbing to a career-high world No. 3 ranking in 2018. Sloane Stephens was born on March 20, 1993, in Plantation, Florida \u2014 basically into a family where athletic excellence was the default setting.<\/p>\n

Her mom, Sybil Smith, was a trailblazer: the first African-American woman to be named a first-team All-American swimmer in Division I history.\u00a0 She\u2019s in the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame and is widely regarded as the greatest swimmer in the school\u2019s history. Casual legend energy.<\/p>\n

Her dad, John Stephens, was a Pro Bowl running back for the New England Patriots in the NFL.\u00a0 Hall of Famer Raymond Berry once called him the best athlete he\u2019d ever seen \u2014 which is not a compliment handed out lightly.<\/p>\n

Life, however, wasn\u2019t simple.\u00a0 After multiple arrests, Sloane\u2019s mother left her father in 1994.\u00a0 Sloane was raised primarily by her mom and her stepfather, Sheldon Farrell, who married Smith in 1997.\u00a0 She grew up with two younger half-brothers \u2014 one of whom, John Stephens Jr., went on to play tight end in the NFL, while the other, Shawn Farrell, starred in baseball and football at Notre Dame High School.<\/p>\n

Two years later, she packed up and moved to Boca Raton, Florida, to train at the Evert Tennis Academy, founded by John Evert and run by his sister, Hall of Famer Chris Evert.\u00a0 By age 12, she switched to the Nick Saviano High Performance Tennis Academy and began homeschooling online \u2014 because when you\u2019re chasing Grand Slam dreams, algebra class sometimes has to go virtual.<\/p>\n

From elite-athlete DNA to elite training grounds, Sloane\u2019s path to the top wasn\u2019t accidental \u2014 it was practically written in the stars (and on the scoreboard).<\/p>\n

Career Journey<\/h2>\n

At 19, Sloane Stephens officially introduced herself to the tennis world at the Australian Open in 2013 \u2014 and she did it the bold way.\u00a0 On her way to the semifinals, she defeated world No. 3 Serena Williams<\/a>. Not exactly a casual Tuesday win. Suddenly, everyone knew her name.<\/p>\n

She climbed as high as No. 11 later that year, but tennis \u2014 like life \u2014 isn\u2019t all smooth forehands.\u00a0 By the end of 2015, her ranking had slipped outside the top 25.\u00a0 Enter coach Kamau Murray. With a reset, a new mindset, and a lot of hard work, she stormed back in 2016, winning three WTA titles in the first half of the year.
