Who is Beverley Cheng?
Beverley is a Toronto-based fitness guru, entrepreneur, actor, and reality television participant. She also maintains the site Born to Sweat, where she shares training programs, healthy meals, and opinions on overall wellness.
Beverley has modeled for multinational brands including Lululemon, Adidas, New Balance, Knix, and Athleta, and she has appeared on the cover of Strong magazine. She was also the head instructor at Gusto Escapes’ December retreat in the Mayan Riviera.
Her Early Life
Beverley Cheng was born on August 20, 1991, in Calgary, Alberta. She attended the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia.
Career Journey
After leaving her comfortable, full-time career in insurance, Beverley Cheng embarked on her entrepreneurial journey, focusing her time and attention on developing her brand, Born To Sweat. She is now a self-employed fitness teacher, model, and blogger based in Toronto. Her blog, Born to Sweat, debuted in January 2014 and has since grown rapidly year after year, becoming a go-to platform for workout videos, exercise variants, pescatarian recipes, and any other ideas or tactics for leading a healthier and happier life. Beverley’s hilarious, open demeanor and high-quality fitness regimens have earned her a loyal social media following in addition to her blog.
“My first job ever was… Working at a library, shelving books! It was so boring. I couldn’t even listen to music as I did it. My mom made me stay there for 6 months before I was allowed to quit. I would tell my 20-year-old self… That no matter what happens, you will end up where you are supposed to be. Don’t compare yourself to everyone else at university or in your business school. You are meant to be you, and not anyone else. I decided to be an entrepreneur because… I have good ideas, I have passion, and I have the ability to get shit done when I put my mind to it. I have always envisioned doing my own thing and building my own brand and that’s what has stuck with me throughout my entire life.”
Facts and Trivia
Beverley considers her modeling for brands like Lululemon, New Balance, Adidas, and Athleta as her proudest moment. Her boldest move, she said, so far, was moving to Spain and living there for four months without knowing a single Spanish word.
Beverley was hospitalized when she was 21 for contracting pneumonia. She considers it as her biggest setback…
“I lost 15 lbs and all my strength. It was extremely hard to go from being a very strong and fit athlete to someone who couldn’t even jog for 30 seconds. I had to take a month off work and two months off from the gym to recover.”
Beverley played rugby during college but stopped completely after she graduated. She is very athletic and according to her, she sweats a lot hence the name of her website…
“I’m a SUPER sweaty person and I used to be so embarrassed about it growing up. Over the years I’ve slowly learned to embrace this quirky flaw and accept that in everything I do, I’m going to do it pretty sweatily. I’ve had lots of people send me messages saying that they used to hate how much they sweat as well until they saw how much I promote it and show it off. I love that it gives other people confidence in themselves.”
Oh, and she doesn’t turn down a slice or two of pizza. She just gets back into working out the next day. She advises that one should prepare and pack a healthy lunch from Monday to Thursday and treat oneself on Fridays.
