She has that rare mix of girl-next-door sweetness and stage-diva fire, turning every performance into a fiesta. One minute she’s melting hearts with soulful lyrics, the next she’s rocking looks that make you question your entire wardrobe. Beautiful, bold, and effortlessly cool, María doesn’t just sing—she sparkles, sizzles, and… Oh, she is just full of hot, hot awesomeness.
Who is María Becerra
María Becerra has been called “a leading voice in Argentina’s urban pop movement”—and with good reason. She’s already earned eight Latin Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist, and she’s just getting started.
Her story began on YouTube, where she charmed fans with covers, vlogs, and tutorials before dropping her debut EP, 222, in 2019. The remix of “High” shot her into Argentina’s Hot 100 top ten, and soon after she signed with 300 Entertainment, releasing her first studio album Animal. By 2021, she was racking up number-one hits—like “Además de Mí” (remix), “Miénteme” with Tini, and “¿Qué Más, Pues?” with J Balvin.
Her second album, La Nena de Argentina, arrived in December 2022 with hits like “Ojalá” and “Automático.” And in 2024, she made history as the first Argentine female singer to perform at the legendary River Plate Stadium. Now, all eyes are on the future, when her much-anticipated new album will drop.
Her Early Life
María de los Ángeles Becerra was born on February 12, 2000, in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, to a family where science and health ruled the house—her dad, Pedro, is a cardiologist, and her mom, Irene, is a nurse. She grew up alongside her two older siblings, Juan Manuel and Geraldine, plus her younger sister, Aylín. With Chilean and Mapuche roots through her great-grandmother, María’s heritage is as rich and colorful as her music.
From as young as six, she was already bouncing between singing lessons, dance, musical comedy, and body expression classes at Valeria Lynch’s academy—while also sneaking in some football training on the side. But her school years weren’t all stage lights; María faced bullying and violence in high school, a tough chapter that would later fuel her resilience.
By age 12, she was already making noise online, uploading covers, sketches, and parodies to Facebook and YouTube. One of her comedy videos hit a million views in just a few hours, and just like that, María went from shy teen to internet star. Her mix of humor, music, and vlogs made her a household name long before her songs dominated the charts.
Career Journey
In 2019, María swapped YouTube skits for studio sessions and officially kicked off her music career. She dropped her debut EP, 222, experimenting with urban pop and even landing her first Billboard Argentina Hot 100 entry with Dime Cómo Hago. But the real “game-changer” came with her single High. A remix featuring Tini and Lola Índigo (plus a super colorful video) shot up to number two in Argentina and cemented María as a rising star. Billboard even called her “a leading voice in Argentina’s urban pop movement.” No pressure, right?
She kept the momentum rolling with Animal, Pt. 1 in 2021, blending hip hop, reggaeton, trap, R&B, and even salsa. The tracks Animal (with Cazzu) and Acaramelao both became top 10 hits, but it was her collabs that really sent her career into overdrive: Miénteme with Tini and ¿Qué Más, Pues? with J Balvin both hit number one at home, with the latter crossing into the U.S. Latin charts. The same year, she snagged a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist—basically the music world’s way of saying, “We see you, María.”
By 2022, she was everywhere: dropping the star-studded remix of Entre Nosotros (another No. 1), performing it live at the Latin AMAs, and even sharing the Grammy stage with J Balvin. She later announced her second album, La Nena de Argentina, a genre-hopping project that played with everything from bachata and cumbia to reggaeton and dancehall.
In 2023, María signed with Warner Music Latina and Wasserman Music for worldwide representation, proving her global takeover was well underway. That year she performed Adiós at Billboard’s Latin Women in Music event, where she picked up the Visionary Award, and landed five more Latin Grammy nominations. Oh, and she broke records by becoming the woman with the most entries on Argentina’s Hot 100—43, if you’re counting.
Then came her ultimate flex: in 2024, María became the first Argentine female singer to sell out the massive Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. To top it off, she charmed U.S. audiences on The Kelly Clarkson Show, performing her single Imán (Two of Us) like it was no big deal.
Facts and Trivia
María often says her biggest personal inspiration has always been her mom. When it comes to music, though, her playlist of idols is a powerhouse mix—Amy Winehouse’s soul, Ariana Grande’s pop flair, Shakira’s charisma, Whitney Houston’s powerhouse vocals, and Natti Natasha’s urban edge. She’s also been open about her admiration for Rihanna and Cardi B, both of whom she looks up to for their boldness and unapologetic artistry.
Becerra is bisexual…
“I feel like I also represent the LGBTQ+ community because I’m bisexual. I love to represent them. I always had it in my head that, if I’m this way, then this is what I’m going to sing about. I’m not only going to make songs about men because I don’t only like men. When I understood and accepted that I also liked girls, that was a difficult time. There was a lot of confusion and prejudice, and I had to think about how my family would take it. It was something very heavy that marked my life, so I have a lot of songs about that chapter.”
María dated fellow singer Rusherking from 2019 to 2021 before finding love again in 2022 with rapper J Rei. Things got serious fast—by July 2023, she was the one popping the question, proposing to him during a romantic trip to Greece. Outside of music and love, María has been open about her lifestyle choices, sharing in a 2022 interview that she had been vegan for about a year after being vegetarian since she was 17. She’s also spoken candidly about her health struggles, including ectopic pregnancies in both 2024 and 2025, showing her willingness to be open and vulnerable with her fans.
