Who is Jane De Leon

Jane de Leon is a Filipino actress and model who skyrocketed into the spotlight when she donned the iconic red suit in Mars Ravelo’s Darna (2022).  Born Jane Florence Benitez de Leon on November 22, 1998, she started out humbly after signing with Star Magic in 2015—taking on bit parts in films and drama anthologies before slowly but surely working her way up.

Her resume has range: from supporting turns in Halik (2018) and FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano (2021), to front-and-center performances in projects like Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme (2023).  Along the way, she’s picked up recognition too, including an Ima Wa Ima Asian Film Festival Award and nominations from the Metro Manila Film Festival and the PMPC Star Awards for Television.

Not too shabby for someone who went from small-screen cameos to literally playing the country’s most legendary superhero.

Her Early Life

Jane Florence Benitez de Leon was born on November 22, 1998, in San Pedro, Laguna, to Maricor, a homemaker, and Ruel, a businessman.  The youngest in the family, she grew up with her brother Francis—but life at home wasn’t always easy.  When her father lost his job, the family’s comfortable life took a hit, and Jane started auditioning for modeling and acting gigs to help out.

In an interview with Ogie Diaz on YouTube, Jane shared how she and her mom used to sneak off to Manila at night for auditions—because her dad wasn’t exactly thrilled about her chasing an acting career.  Before the screen came calling, her mom also encouraged her to try beauty pageants, planting the seeds of her showbiz journey.

Her father had four other children from previous relationships—Ned, Kirox, Carol, and Karen—making for a big extended family.  Jane went to school in San Pedro, attending Sampaguita Village Elementary, San Roque Elementary, and later Sampaguita Village National High School.

In 2016, she faced a devastating loss when her father passed away from lung cancer.  It was then that Jane decided to go all in on showbiz—a choice that would eventually lead her to become one of the country’s most recognizable faces.

Career Journey

Jane kicked off her career the classic way—through pageants and modeling contests.  In 2013, she joined Teen Supermodel Philippines and made it all the way to the semifinals.  A year later, she signed with Glamoure Talent Agency Inc. and landed her very first TV commercial for Quake Overload.  Not long after, a talent manager spotted her potential and encouraged her to try acting.  Soon enough, she was training under Star Magic and slowly stepping into the world of showbiz.

By 2015, Jane was already dipping her toes into acting with minor film roles. The following year, she joined It’s Showtime’s girl group GirlTrends alongside Loisa Andalio, Maris Racal, and Barbie Imperial.  That same year, she officially debuted on TV through Wansapanataym’s “Tikboyong” episode, while also popping up in anthologies like Maalaala Mo Kaya and Ipaglaban Mo!.

Her big break in teleseryes came in 2017 when she joined the cast of the action-fantasy hit La Luna Sangre as Lauren Catapang.  That year was busy on the film side too—she snagged major roles in the slasher flick The Debutantes and the advocacy-driven drama Jose Bartolome: Guro.

In 2019, Jane made a quick cameo in the horror film The Heiress, but the real plot twist came a few months later.  When Liza Soberano had to back out of the long-awaited Darna project due to a finger injury, ABS-CBN needed a new superhero—and Jane landed the cape.  Director Jerold Tarog personally showed her audition tapes to the network execs, who gave her a unanimous yes.  Tarog later praised her as an “instinctive actress,” which is high praise when you’re stepping into one of the Philippines’ most iconic roles.

But then, the pandemic happened. In August 2020, the big-screen Darna was shelved indefinitely, and the plan pivoted to a TV series instead.  While waiting, Jane took on the role of agent Natalia Mante in Ang Probinsyano in 2021, holding her own alongside some of the country’s biggest stars.  After seven months, she left the show and threw herself into superhero training—intense workouts, stunt rehearsals, and even voice modulation for Darna’s legendary battle cry.

By August 2022, her moment finally came.  Darna premiered on TV, and Jane soared. Critics and fans alike praised her performance as “sincere and genuine,” with acclaimed director Chito S. Roño himself saying she “has done very well.”

Facts and Trivia

In 2019, Jane didn’t just win the Belo Beauty Special Award at the ABS-CBN Ball—she won hearts, too. Instead of cashing in, she handed over the entire prize to Bantay Bata 163, the foundation dedicated to protecting at-risk kids.  “Better to be an example,” she said, proving she’s got as much heart as she does star power.

And because one charity gig isn’t enough for this queen, Jane also hit the runway at the Red Charity Gala that same year, strutting for a cause and raising funds for the Philippine Red Cross. Gorgeous, generous, and giving?  Now that’s a real-life superhero move.
