Her career reached new heights with a supporting role in the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which opened doors to leading roles in Netflix’s action-comedy series FUBAR (2023–2025) and as Joan Baez in the biopic A Complete Unknown (2024).  Her performance as Baez earned her nominations for both a SAG Award and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress — not bad for a résumé that’s still climbing.  In 2025, she was named one of Time’s 100 Next, cementing her place as one of Hollywood’s rising stars to watch.

Her Early Life

Monica Barbaro was born on June 17, 1990, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Mill Valley.  Her heritage is a vibrant mix — her dad is Italian American, while her mom brings Mexican, German, and Nicaraguan roots to the family.  Her parents divorced when she was young, but Monica thrived, graduating from Tamalpais High School in 2007.

From an early age, Monica was drawn to movement, starting with dance and eventually studying ballet.  While exploring acting through school electives, she earned a degree in dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in New York City.

After graduating in 2010, Monica decided to fully embrace acting.  She returned to San Francisco, booked her first commercial and a short film, signed with an agent, and honed her craft at the Beverly Hills Playhouse — the perfect mix of training and opportunity to launch her career.

Career Journey

Monica Barbaro first caught the public’s eye in 2013 with her lead role in It’s Not About the Nail, a viral comedy short about the quirks of communication in marriage.  Her first major television role came soon after, playing Yael in the second season of Lifetime’s UnREAL.  From there, she joined Dick Wolf’s Chicago franchise in NBC’s legal drama Chicago Justice, portraying Anna Valdez, and in 2018 starred as Cora Vasquez on Netflix’s The Good Cop alongside Josh Groban and Tony Danza.  Between 2018 and 2019, she also had a recurring role on ABC’s sitcom Splitting Up Together.

Monica’s big cinematic breakout arrived in 2022 with Top Gun: Maverick, where she played Lieutenant Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, a skilled naval aviator — a role that showcased both her intensity and her cool under pressure.

Monica took on a transformative role in 2024 as activist and folk singer Joan Baez in the James Mangold-directed Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet. To prepare, she took singing and guitar lessons, fully immersing herself in the role. Her performance earned her widespread acclaim, including nominations for both the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Screen Actors Guild Award.

Looking ahead, Monica is set to make her stage debut in 2025 in a West End revival of the French play Les Liaisons dangereuses at the National Theatre.  She’ll star opposite Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner under the direction of Marianne Elliott — proving that Monica is just getting started, whether on screen or on stage.
