Now, this woman doesn’t need to show that much skin for her to be sexy. Her stare and her class alone will tell you how hot she is. Alia Bhatt is truly a woman deserving of a feature here. And not just an ordinary one. She just might be the youngest in our Timeless Tuesday features.
So yeah, let yourself be enamoured by the beauty and grace of this lady. It really is impossible not to, I’m telling you.
Who is Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt is a British-Indian actress and one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, known for effortlessly bouncing between box-office hits and critically acclaimed roles. She made her splashy debut in Student of the Year (2012), then quickly proved she was more than a launchpad success with powerhouse performances in films like Highway (2014) and Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022).
Born into a film family as the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan, Alia didn’t just inherit the spotlight—she earned it. She’s become especially known for playing complex women in tough, layered situations, picking roles that challenge both her and the audience. Along the way, she’s collected a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards, built a career as a producer and entrepreneur, and cemented her status as a full-blown fashion icon.
She’s also one of India’s highest-paid actresses, because talent plus smart choices tends to pay off. In 2022, Time honoured her with the Time100 Impact Award, and in 2024, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Not bad for someone who’s still very much in her prime.
Her Early Life
Alia Bhatt was born on 15 March 1993 in Bombay (now Mumbai) into the famously filmi Bhatt family. She’s the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and British actress Soni Razdan, with roots that span Gujarati, Kashmiri-Pandit, and German heritage—and yes, she holds British citizenship too. Acting and storytelling were basically part of the family language: she’s the granddaughter of producer-director Nanabhai Bhatt, has an elder sister, Shaheen, half-siblings Pooja and Rahul Bhatt, and a family tree that includes actor Emraan Hashmi, director Mohit Suri, and producer Mukesh Bhatt. Bollywood, but make it ancestral.
Despite the famous surname, Alia has said her childhood was surprisingly grounded. She attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Juhu and later dropped out in twelfth grade to chase acting full-time—a bold move that, in hindsight, worked out rather well. She’s also been open about growing up mostly with her mother, as Mahesh Bhatt was largely absent during her early years. Alia has shared that she didn’t truly develop a close relationship with her father until she became an actress herself.
Her love for performing showed up early. Alia realised she wanted to act while rehearsing for her kindergarten school choir and soon found herself taking dance classes at Shiamak Davar’s institute. Her first brush with acting came at the age of five, when she briefly played the younger version of Preity Zinta’s character in Sangharsh (1999)—though she later admitted she barely remembers it. At nine, she auditioned for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black (2005) and didn’t get the part, proving even future superstars hear “no” early on. A few years later, Bhansali cast her opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Balika Vadhu, a film that was ultimately shelved—but clearly, the universe had other, much bigger plans for her.
Career Journey
After making her acting debut as a child in the 1999 thriller film Sangharsh, she played her first leading role in Karan Johar’s teen film Student of the Year (2012). She won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for playing a kidnapping victim in the road drama Highway (2014) and went on to establish herself with starring roles in several romantic films produced by Johar’s studio Dharma Productions.
Bhatt won Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for playing a victim of drug abuse in the crime drama Udta Punjab (2016), an undercover spy in the thriller Raazi (2018), a possessive girlfriend in the musical drama Gully Boy (2019), and the title role of a prostitute in the biopic Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). The last of these also earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. She expanded to film production with the black comedy Darlings (2022) and had her biggest commercial success in the fantasy film Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) and the romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). The last of these earned her a fifth Best Actress award at Filmfare, followed by a record-setting sixth for her performance in the action thriller Jigra (2024), which she also co-produced.
In addition to acting, Bhatt supports various charities and is an investor and prominent brand endorser. She founded an ecological initiative, CoExist, in 2017, a production company, Eternal Sunshine Productions, in 2019, and a sustainable clothing brand, Ed-a-Mamma, in 2022. Bhatt has sung eight of her film songs, including the single “Samjhawan Unplugged” in 2014.
Philanthropy and Advocacies
Alia Bhatt doesn’t just use her platform for films and fashion—she puts it to work for causes she genuinely cares about. Her advocacy goes back years, starting in 2013 when she teamed up with PETA to raise awareness about homeless animals. By 2021, PETA India named her Person of the Year for championing animal-friendly fashion and speaking up for dogs and cats everywhere (the furry kind, to be clear).
She’s also been a long-time supporter of children’s charities. In 2015, Alia joined a fundraiser for the Cuddles Foundation, which supports children battling cancer, and in 2017 she even walked the runway to help raise funds. That same year, she launched CoExist, an eco-conscious initiative focused on the welfare of street animals—complete with a clever donation drive that turned discarded denim into dog collars. Sustainability, but make it stylish. She later collaborated with Facebook on the Find Your Green campaign to promote environmental awareness.
In 2018, Alia got her hands dirty—literally—by joining Aamir Khan’s Paani Foundation, visiting a village in Latur, Maharashtra, and taking part in on-ground watershed management work. She also launched Mi Wardrobe is Su Wardrobe (MiSu), an initiative where she auctions pieces from her own closet for good causes, including providing electricity to a village in Karnataka. Proof that a great outfit can do more than just look good.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she partnered with ActionAid India in 2021 to provide essentials to underprivileged communities. In 2022, she became the first Indian actress to collaborate with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group for their I’m a Fan campaign, raising funds for the Salaam Bombay Foundation, which supports underprivileged adolescents. She continued her MiSu mission in 2023 by auctioning the saris she wore in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani to raise money for women’s healthcare. And in 2024, she hosted a charity gala in London for the Salaam Bombay Foundation—because if you’re going to do good, you might as well do it globally.
Facts and Trivia
Alia Bhatt has never been content with just acting—she’s been quietly (and then very loudly) building an empire on the side. She dipped her toe into fashion back in 2014 with her own women’s clothing line for Jabong.com, followed by a handbag collection with VIP Industries in 2018. She’s also put her money where her mouth is, investing in beauty giant Nykaa and India’s first biomaterial startup, Phool.co. Clearly, spreadsheets don’t scare her.
In 2022, Alia launched Ed-a-Mamma, a sustainable maternity and children’s clothing brand inspired by her belief in raising environmentally conscious kids. The brand didn’t just look good—it did good too, winning PETA India’s Vegan Fashion Award for Best Vegan Kidswear Brand. By July 2023, Ed-a-Mamma was valued at around ₹1.5 billion (about US$18 million), and later that year, Reliance Retail snapped up a 51% majority stake. Alia then expanded the brand’s universe by writing a children’s picture book, Ed Finds a Home, kicking off The Adventures of Ed-a-Mamma series. By 2026, the brand had grown even further, branching into baby personal care with its Your Baby Safe range. From movie sets to bedtime stories—range.
Unsurprisingly, the business world has been paying attention. Forbes Asia placed Alia on its 30 Under 30 list in 2017 and its 100 Digital Stars list in 2020. She’s been a fixture on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 since 2014, peaking at number eight in 2019—the same year she was named the country’s highest-paid actress, with estimated annual earnings of ₹592 million. She’s also been recognised by GQ India, YouGov, Femina, The Indian Express, India Today, Outlook India, Variety, Financial Times, Business Today, Hello!, and Gold House. At this point, award lists might need their own filing system.
In 2020, Alia joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—yes, that Academy. In 2023, she became Gucci’s first-ever Indian global ambassador, attending fashion shows in Seoul and Milan. A year later, she added L’Oréal to her résumé, walking for the brand at Paris Fashion Week, and in 2025, she was announced as Levi’s global ambassador. She also fronts campaigns for major names like Coca-Cola, Garnier, and Maybelline, because apparently one global brand isn’t enough.
Her brand value reflects all of this hustle. Estimated at US$36.5 million in 2018, it climbed steadily—peaking at over US$102 million in 2021 and 2022, and reaching US$116.4 million in 2024. Oh, and as of October 2023, she’s also the third most-followed Indian actress on Instagram. Actress, entrepreneur, global ambassador, children’s author—Alia Bhatt isn’t multitasking, she’s speed-running success.
