Meet Malavika Mohanan, an Indian beauty who could make a face-to-face encounter feel like a scene straight out of a movie. Gorgeous? Absolutely. But reducing her to good looks would be doing her a serious disservice. She has the talent and screen presence to back up the attention, too. So, take a few minutes away from whatever else is demanding your attention (yes, even your phone notifications) and get to know Malavika a little better. Trust us, she’s worth the read.
Who is Malavika Mohanan
Malavika Mohanan is an Indian actress best known for her work in Tamil and Malayalam films. She made her acting debut in the Malayalam film Pattam Pole in 2013, then caught the attention of critics with her starring role in Majid Majidi’s Hindi film Beyond the Clouds (2017). From there, she continued building her filmography with appearances in movies such as The Great Father (2017), Petta (2019), Master (2021), and Hridayapoorvam (2025). Clearly, Malavika has been keeping busy—and making sure audiences have plenty of reasons to remember her.
Her Early Life
Malavika Mohanan was born on August 4, 1993, in Payyanur, a town in Kerala’s Kannur district. She is the daughter of cinematographer K. U. Mohanan, so you could say she grew up with a little movie magic in the family. Although she was born in Kerala, Malavika grew up in Mumbai, giving her a blend of roots that spans two very different parts of India.
Career Start
Malavika Mohanan initially had her sights set on a career behind the camera. After earning a degree in Mass Media from Mumbai’s Wilson College, she considered following in her father K. U. Mohanan’s footsteps as a cinematographer or director. But just as she was thinking about pursuing further studies, life decided to throw in an unexpected plot twist.
She accompanied her father to a commercial shoot for a fairness cream featuring Malayalam superstar Mammootty. During the shoot, Mammootty asked Malavika whether she was interested in acting and eventually offered her a role opposite his son, Dulquer Salmaan, in an upcoming Malayalam film. She took some time to think it over, auditioned, and eventually signed on for Pattam Pole (2013). With little acting experience under her belt, Malavika learned the ropes as filming progressed. And because movie sets apparently enjoy throwing people into the deep end, she also ended up designing her own costumes when the original costume designer fell ill. Talk about multitasking.
Pattam Pole told the story of a romance between a Tamil Brahmin boy and a Christian girl. Unfortunately, the film received mixed reviews and failed to make much of an impression at the box office. Critics were somewhat kinder to Malavika, though. Rediff.com felt her lively performance showed promise, even if it wasn’t quite polished, while The Times of India judged her effort decent. Not exactly a standing ovation, but everyone has to start somewhere. Outside acting, Malavika continued exploring her interest in fashion by launching The Scarlet Window, a blog focused on Indian ethnic fusion styles.
She returned to the screen in Nirnayakam (2015), playing a ballet dancer. Her performance earned positive reviews, although the film once again struggled commercially. She also worked on Naale, a film opposite Fahadh Faasil in which she played a tribal girl. However, the project was eventually abandoned midway through production. Sometimes, even a promising film career comes with a few unfinished chapters.
In 2016, Malavika made her Kannada film debut with Naanu Mattu Varalakshmi, starring opposite newcomer Prithvi. The film had a quiet box-office run, but critics responded well, particularly to Malavika’s portrayal of the title character, Varalakshmi. It was another encouraging step forward, proving that a film doesn’t need to set the box office on fire to earn a little appreciation.
Her next notable appearance came in The Great Father (2017), a crime thriller in which she played a police officer alongside a star-studded cast that included Mammootty, Arya, and Sneha. This time, things went considerably better: the film received positive reviews and performed well commercially. After a few mixed results and some career detours, Malavika was finally gaining momentum—and her journey in cinema was beginning to look a lot more promising.
Her Big Break
Malavika Mohanan’s big breakthrough came with Beyond the Clouds (2017), a Hindi drama directed by acclaimed filmmaker Majid Majidi. She played Tara, a poor young woman from Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat area, alongside Ishaan Khatter, who made his acting debut in the film. After auditioning, Malavika landed the role ahead of established stars Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut. Not a bad way to make your Hindi film debut, is it?
For Malavika, working with Majidi so early in her career was especially meaningful. During her undergraduate studies, she had regularly studied his films and written essays about them. Going from analyzing a director’s work in college to starring in one of his films must have made those assignments feel a lot more worthwhile.
She also went to considerable lengths to bring Tara to life. Malavika reportedly lost eight kilograms in just 15 days for a prison sequence and avoided washing her hair for several days to better reflect her character’s circumstances. Method acting, apparently, doesn’t always come with glamorous perks. The film screened at several international festivals before receiving a worldwide release in April 2018. Malavika’s performance earned positive reviews and helped establish her as an actress worth watching.
She then turned her attention to Tamil cinema, beginning with Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta (2019). The film featured a formidable ensemble cast, including Rajinikanth, Vijay Sethupathi, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. With so many major stars sharing the screen, Malavika had plenty of company—and plenty of motivation to make her presence felt. She even hired a Tamil-speaking tutor to help her practice her lines, proving that learning the language was part of the job, not something she planned to wing on set.
Her next major Tamil release was Master (2021), an action thriller starring Vijay. Malavika played Charulatha, a college lecturer, and the film became a commercial hit. It also went on to become the highest-grossing film of her career, giving her filmography a welcome box-office victory.
Unfortunately, the winning streak didn’t last. In 2022, she starred opposite Dhanush in Maaran, which premiered directly on Disney+ Hotstar. Critics and audiences gave the film a largely negative reception. Not every project can be a hit, of course; even the most promising careers come with the occasional cinematic pothole.
Malavika’s only release in 2023 was the Malayalam romantic drama Christy. She followed it with Thangalaan, a historical action-fantasy film directed by Pa. Ranjith and starring Vikram. Originally planned for a Pongal release in January 2024, the film was postponed and eventually arrived in cinemas on August 15, India’s Independence Day.
She also appeared in the Hindi action thriller Yudhra, opposite Siddhant Chaturvedi, which was scheduled for release on September 20, 2024. With projects spanning Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada cinema, Malavika was steadily expanding her reach rather than sticking to just one industry.
In Hridayapoorvam (2025), Malavika played Haritha, an architect from Mumbai, opposite Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. The film received positive reviews and became the fourth-highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2025, as well as the 13th-highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. That’s quite a result—and another reminder that Malavika’s career has been about more than just a pretty face. From studying films in college to starring in international festival selections and box-office hits, she’s been steadily building a résumé that deserves attention.
