Who is Raica Oliveira?
Raica is a Brazilian high fashion model known for her association with numerous brands such as Emanuel Ungaro, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent, Vogue, Chanel, Lancôme, Victoria’s Secret, Pepe Jeans, JLO, TNG, Ann Taylor, and XOXO. She has also, since the year 2000, has appeared in more than 6 Vogue editions such as Vogue USA, Vogue Australia, Vogue Spain, Vogue Italy, Vogue Brazil, Vogue Paris. And not only that, she was also featured in other magazines as well, such as Elle, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Mademoiselle, and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
She is currently with Next Models (London, New York, Milan, and Miami), Elite Models, Munchen Models, and many more.
Her Early Life
Raica Oliveira was born on January 22, 1984, in Niterói, Brazil. She is the youngest of three children. She has two brothers: Givago (an economist) and Pablo (a lawyer). Raica attended and graduated from the Sao Vicente de Paula school in Niteroi.
Since the age of 10, Raica showed an interest in modeling. She was discovered by the same agent who discovered Gisele Bundchen, Sergio Mattos. In 1999, Oliveira entered the Elite Model Look contest in Brazil and beat 30,000 girls for the top prize. She was sent to Nice, France, for the final international competition, where she placed second. After that success, she immediately signed with Elite Models. She then moved to New York with her mother Conceição de Oliveira to try to further build her career.
Career Start
Shortly after winning 2nd place at the Elite Model Look International Final, Raica (pronounced Hi-KA) was christened “The sensation” at the fall fashion shows in Paris and Milan. The then 17-year-old stunner managed to emerge as one of the most talked about models of the season alongside fellow Elite stars Adriana Lima, Maggie Rizer, Oluchi Onweagba, and Karen Elson. Her first campaign was for Christian Dior and it appeared in the likes of Vogue and Vanity Fair.
In May 2000 Oliveira was one of the models to appear in the Vogue USA edition’ segment Blame It On Rio. That stint marked her as one of Brazil’s most searched top models and eventually led her to be ranked by the magazine Istoe Gente to be one of the best paid Brazilian models, earning US$300,000 for her work (which included walking in more than 76 fashion shows in only two seasons.), in 2001.
In 2002, Raica appeared in a calendar for Vespa along Nourchene Scherif and Mia Rosing. The following year, she became the face of Dolce and Gabbana, advertising their perfume and also modeling for brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Ralph Lauren and more. A couple of years after that, she posed for Pirelli Calendar (2005). That same year, Jennifer Lopez decided to make her own clothing line and Raica was chosen to appear on the ads as the head face for the fall/ winter collection. It was also in 2005 when Raica modeled for Victoria’s Secret swimwear collection.
In 2006, Raica has joined the ranks of models charging over €20,000 for a fashion show after she walked on the runway for TNG fashion show in Rio.
Her Sports Illustrated and Victoria’s Secret Stint
Raica is also in the Sports Illustrated 2007 Calendar and made an appearance at the Sports Illustrated 2007 Sportsman of the Year Awards on December 4, 2007. In March 2007 Oliveira joined IMG Paris and she also appeared in Ann Taylor advertisements. She also became the new face of Avon and also became a representative for David Morris London jewelry in the same year. And on September of the said year, Raica was one of the supermodels who appeared in the Blame It On Brazil edition of Vanity Fair.
In February 2008, she appeared in a GQ United Kingdom editorial. Also in 2008, Raica landed a contract with the fashion brand XOXO. The new XOXO campaign featured both Raica’s face and name in their brand, revealing Raica as one of their spokesmodels.
In 2009, Raica was featured in Victoria’s Secret’s new campaign. It was the second time since 2005 when she appeared in their swimwear catalog.
Outside Modeling
Since 2008, Oliveira has been working as a reporter in Paris and New York for the Portuguese Jornal Record. In the same year, she was also chosen to be the presenter of Fórum Desenvolvimento Sustentável but was unable to do so because of her modeling work.
Raica is also a part of the Arte Solidaria foundation and she is pledged in beneficent causes. Her photo is in a book in a calendar format that the Hope House has launched in 2008. Her full earnings from this went directly to an institution that helps children with cancer.
Facts and Trivia
Raica is a proud vegetarian and she has stated she has been one her whole life and does not feel the urge to eat animal meat. She loves animals and she has eight dogs in her hometown.
Raica speaks 5 languages; Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, and Italian.
She seriously dated Nat Rothschild in 2008.
Oliveira has six tattoos and plans to study philosophy at a university when she retires.
In November 2010, Raica became the new face of lingerie brand Ultimo replacing Kelly Brook. However, while Raica is happy to pose in her underwear for the new campaign, she is against posing nude:
“I could not pose nude. Nothing against those who do, but I never felt right about it. It’s not something that would make me proud.”
