Funny, sweet, talented, hardworking, and stunning Mila Kunis is truly a star. We’ve seen her on TV series as Meg Griffin on Family Guy and Jackie Burkhart on That ‘70s Show. She has also excelled in huge Hollywood films, starring in movies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the box office hit Black Swan. That’s not all; there’s a lot more fascinating things about this beautiful actress. Get to know her better and check out some of the facts that you probably didn’t know about Mila.
She Left Ukraine With Her Family And Came To America At 7
Mila was born in 1983 in Chernivtsi in the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union. Her family moved to the United States when she was seven years old and they settled in Los Angeles.
Life was tough for Mila and her family. New to the US, Mila struggled to settle down during the first year. She cried every day and could not get to understand the people or the culture. In 2008, the actress told Ellen DeGeneres that her grandma would go with her to school and bring candy so she could make friends with other students.
Mila also spoke to Glamour magazine in 2016 that her parents hustled to provide for the family, “but growing up poor, I never missed out on anything. My parents did a beautiful job of not making me feel like I was lesser than any other kids.
She also told Stylist in the past about her upbringing. “I came to LA when I was seven years old. I do think my parents upbringing shaped who I am, 100%. Whether we were in Ukraine or in Los Angeles, the rules I followed as a kid and as a teenager were that of European parents.”
She credited her good work ethics to her parents and considered them always her role models.
She continued, “There was no ‘I want’; no slamming doors. There was a line of respect my parents taught me and there is a work ethic that they instilled in me at a very young age. I do know that I have the most incredible parents in the whole wide world. I respect them, I look up to them. They were my role models, and forever will be.”
She Landed Her First Acting Job In A Barbie Commercial
Mila landed her first acting gig in a Barbie commercial. However, it was never released.
“It was called a camping Barbie and I don’t think that Barbie ever came out, but I did the commercial for it,” Mila explained in a video segment of Marie Claire.
She also appeared in a commercial for a glitter hair doll, and said that she loved the job because she got to keep the Barbies.
Mila’s dad enrolled her in an acting class he heard about. From there, Kunis got an agent and auditioned into roles. The rest is history. Years later, Mila Kunis is one of the biggest Hollywood names these days.
The journey to success for Mila is just as crazy as it sounds.
“I have no clue how I got here. I feel as if I tricked a lot of people and I don’t even know how,” she told Stylist. Buy, that doesn’t stop the actress’ talent and drive from progressing forward.
She Really Loves ‘Return to Oz’
Needless to say, Mila has been extremely successful in her career. She landed on several roles in many films and one of her personal favorites was her role in 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. She once shared her fondest memories of its story.
“I think the first book, when I was 9 years old — full-length book in English — that I read was Return to Oz,” Mila told BBC News. “As a kid, the first movie that I remember seeing that resonated with me was The Wizard of Oz. I think just visually the color, the spectrum of it, and how fantastical it was and how much you wanted to live in that world, for a 9-year-old, was so magical and so grand, so I have the greatest, fondest memories of it.”
She Does Not Take Criticism Well
If you’re living in a limelight, there will always be negative people who will criticize you. She made a really honest response about dealing with criticism when she was asked by James Franco in an interview for Interview magazine in 2012.
“As cheesy as it sounds, you deal with it the best that you can,” Mila told Franco. “To be honest, I don’t deal with it well. I can’t tell you that I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m so great at dealing with it. It’s in one ear and out the other!’ That would be complete and utter bullshit. But I take it for what it’s worth. Sometimes I let it get to me — I have internal dialogues with myself all day long.
“But, you know, people criticize a woman for everything — like, I get criticized for how my hair looks when I go grocery shopping or the fact that I don’t wear makeup when I get my nails done. Women get scrutinized all the time for the way they look. So if I can learn to deal with that, then I do believe I can learn to deal with people’s criticisms of my film choices.”
Her Relationship With Husband, Ashton Kutcher, Is Really Adorable
The two first started dating in April 2012 after playing love interests on That ’70s Show. They got married in a top-secret ceremony in July 2015. Now, they are proud parents to two kids and their relationship is stronger than ever.
Their relationship was notoriously private, but the lovebirds can’t help but gush sweet messages about each other.
“My husband is an incredibly hands-on dad. When my child was born, I was breastfeeding, and he said, ‘That’s your connection. I want to change every diaper.” When we’re in public, if it’s a pee-pee diaper, you can change her at the table, but if it’s a poo-poo diaper, you don’t want to affect the people eating. So he’s like, ‘Err, I guess I’m going to the ladies’ room to do it,” Mila told the Telegraph.
She also shared their spontaneous trips together, saying: “My husband and I always backpack through Europe. We were in Belgium recently, and we thought, ‘Let’s go straight to the airport and get on a flight to Spain.’ We can just pick up and go.”
They Literally Lived Out Their Movies No Strings Attached’ And ‘Friends With Benefits’
Mila and husband Ashton literally lived out their movies about ‘No Strings Attached (Ashton starred ‘No Strings Attached’ with Natalie Portman, Mila starred ‘Friends With Benefits’ with Justine Timberlake).
“I see this guy and I see his back and he’s really tall,” Mila said of seeing Ashton in The Howard Stern Show. “Then he just turns around and it was literally like if we were in a movie, the music would start playing and the violins would go. I think for the first time ever he took my breath away – I was like f—, he’s good-looking.”
Mila said that she was invited by the actor to his housewarming party after catching up with each other. And though it was later discovered that Ashton had intended to set her up with one of his friends, the sparks between the pair were undeniable.
“Long story short, I didn’t leave until the next morning,” revealed the actress. “[It was the] first time I ever slept over while I was single.”
The actress told said that they both initially decided to keep things casual, revealing that they would even share to each other when they were going on dates with someone else. And same as what happened in their movies, it didn’t last long. Mila joked that their relationship mirrored their films No Strings Attached and No Strings Attached: “If we had just paid attention to those movies we should have known s— like this does not work out in real life.”
Then the two decided to keep their relationship exclusive after 3 months of casually dating. She said, “We were incredibly open with each other in regards to where we were with our feelings.”
“We started dating with the idea we were both never going to get married,” she said. “A year later we were like, ‘Tomorrow let’s [get married],’” Mila continued.
She Struggles To Keep Balance
It’s certainly not easy to find balance if you’re a working parent. The actress is trying to find the balance between her love for her kids and her career.
“I’ve changed my work schedule a little bit. I think that when I got pregnant with Wyatt, I put so much pressure on myself to figure out, ‘How am I going to balance work and life?’ And I realized it’s impossible,” the actress shared on Live With Kelly. “It literally ate me alive. No one put the pressure on me. I just did it fully to myself.”
Although the actress finds it challenging to balance her responsibilities, and even she doesn’t quite know yet. She shared in the past to Playboy magazine:
“I want to be a present mom. When I was growing up, both my mom and dad worked full-time. I guess the only thing I can say about that is they worked full-time in one location. I’m never in the same place for more than two months. How am I ever going to have a family like that? You have to make compromises.”
“If that means I do one movie a year, if people still want to see me and hire me and I don’t suck by that point, great. But my only source of happiness can’t be dependent on something so fickle. And I find this industry to be incredibly fickle.”
She Skipped Social Media
Many of you might have noticed that the actress isn’t anywhere on social media. Mila told Cosmopolitan magazine for its August 2018 issue, “I was so late to that train. I remember at some point my roommate was like, ‘You know, there’s a thing called Facebook,’ and I was like, ‘What is this Facebook? Who’s gonna poke each other? That’s just weird.’ And then Ashton and I reconnected and started talking. He used to be incredibly forward-thinking with social media, when the intent was to connect to people.”
“But it took an ugly turn and became all about who can be the loudest, who can be the angriest and the most negative. Then it’s just not a fun game to play.”
She Dated The Huge Former Child Star Macaulay Culkin
Before things became official with Ashton, there was another actor who shared Mila’s life in the past and that is Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin. The two were together for almost a decade and it still seems like a lifetime ago. Macaulay’s child star popularity was a bit of a challenge in their dating.
“He was huge. You couldn’t walk down the street with him,” she remembered while talking to during a candid interview on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show. “He always had this weird attraction, like fans just screamed when they saw him! They didn’t know how to react. It wasn’t like a normal response to a celebrity. Fans responded in a very abnormal way to him.”
Mila was only 18 when she began dating the child star. And despite being together for so long, the actress said that she didn’t have any intentions of tying the knot.
She continued, “But I know since before we started dating, since I was like, 16, I told my dad, ‘Just so you know, I don’t believe in marriage.’ And my dad’s like, ‘What did I just create?’ And then at one point I was like, ‘I’ll get married when gay people are allowed to marry.’ I was like, ‘This is not for me!'”
We all know that her perceptions have changed now that she’s married with Ashton.
She Was Crowned The Sexiest Woman Alive By Esquire
In 2012, Mila was named as the Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire. Although this title is a flattering one, the actress however opened up in an interview with the magazine that she’s more focused on her desire to remain true to her self:
“What I do and who I am are two different things. And they always will be. What happens with people is they lose sight of who they are, and they become either who they want to be or who they are perceived to be.”
She continued, “I think that if I bought into the hype, I would lose all sight of who I am, and so much of who I am is what my parents went through and instilled in me. And I never want to lose that. Ever. Because I would be so disappointed if I didn’t make them proud.”
