Who is Eugenie Bouchard?

Eugene Genie Bouchard is a professional tennis player from Canada who lives in the Bahamas.  After winning the Wimbledon girls’ title as a junior in 2012, she was named WTA Newcomer of the Year at the end of the 2013 WTA Tour.  Eugene became Canada’s first-born player to reach a major singles final at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships.  She also reached the semifinals of the Australian and French Opens in 2014.

Eugene won the WTA Most Improved Player award for the 2014 season and rose to world No. 5, becoming the first Canadian tennis player to do so.

She also topped SportsPro’s list of the “World’s 50 Most Marketable Athletes 2015,” beating out Neymar, Steph Curry, and Usain Bolt.

Her Early Life

Eugenie Bouchard was born in Montreal on February 25, 1994.  She is one of the twins of investment bankers Michel Bouchard and J. Leclair in Montreal.  Eugene grew up in Westmount, where she went to The Study, a private girls’ school, and shared a street with former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.  She began playing tennis when she was five years old and was a member of Tennis Canada’s National Training Centre in Montreal.  She moved to Florida at the age of 12 to train with coach Nick Saviano.

Career As Of Late

Genie Bouchard started her 2023 season with a wildcard entry into the qualifying draw of the Auckland Open.  Despite a strong opening-round win against 11th seed Ann Li, Genie was forced to withdraw from the tournament before the second round of qualifying after suffering a bout of food poisoning.

At the Australian Open, she used her protected ranking to enter the qualifying draw, however, she was defeated in the first round by American Ashlyn Krueger, in three sets.

She qualified for the main draw at the Madrid Open, also using a protected ranking to enter the qualifying competition, and won over Dayana Yastremska in the first round.
Bouchard withdrew from the French Open, giving no clear reason.

Facts and Trivia

Genie is the first Canadian to compete in a Grand Slam final and the first to compete in a Wimbledon final.

Her favorite sitcom The Big Bang Theory and one of the show’s main characters (Jim Parsons who played Sheldon Cooper), attended her final Wimbledon championship in 2014.

Christina Aguilera‘s “Genie in a Bottle” is Genie’s favorite song, and Roger Federer is her favorite tennis player.
