Our Timeless Tuesday feature is, we know, familiar to you. Especially if you’re a fan of Smallville.  Laura Vandervoot is still as hot today as she was when she portrayed Supergirl in the said series.

In this article, friends, are going on a nostalgia trip and revisiting the hotness that made us stay up a few more minutes when we catch a glimpse of her in one of the series she was in.  Oh, you know what I mean.

Who is Laura Vandervoort?

Laura is a Canadian actress who is probably best known for playing Sadie Harrison in the CTV teen drama series Instant Star, Arla The Bolt-Gun Killer Cogan in the Syfy supernatural drama series Haven, Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) in The CW serial drama series Smallville, and Lisa in the ABC science fiction series V (2009).  Laura has been working as an actress since she was 13 years old.

In 2014, she played Elena Michaels in the Space Channel drama series Bitten, which was based on Kelley Armstrong’s novel series Women of the Otherworld.  Laura became the World Vision Canada Ambassador after initiating two PETA campaigns.

Her Early Life

Laura Dianne Vandervoort was born September 22, 1984, in Toronto.  She is the daughter of a Canadian mother and a Dutch father.  She suffered meningitis in her first few weeks of life, causing a severe illness that lasted several months.  Her parents were told that she would not survive.

Laura grew up participating in a variety of sports, including football, karate (where she holds a second-degree black belt), basketball, tennis, gymnastics, and baseball.

Career Journey

Laura grew up admiring Meryl Streep‘s artistry, Grace Kelly‘s sophistication, Tim Burton’s off-the-wall twists, and the alluring Canadian figure Gordon Pinsent.  Laura began her career in background work on Canadian commercials and TV shows such as Road to Avonlea and Harriet the Spy.  She landed her first speaking role at the age of thirteen for the children’s series Goosebumps and then Are You Afraid of the Dark?  She went on to take acting classes and book other TV guest star roles, such as Disney movies of the week Mom’s Got A Date With A Vampire and Alley Cats Strike.

Laura earned the lead part of Sadie Harrison on the popular CTV TV series Instant Star, which aired for four seasons when she was nineteen years old and attending York University with a major in Psychology and English.

Laura made her feature film debut with The Lookout in 2006. Several further TV appearances, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, landed Laura in the clutches of The CW. Getting the coveted part of Supergirl AKA Kara on The CW’s smash series Smallville.  Following Smallville, Laura booked the sequel to Jessica Alba/Paul Walker’s feature picture Into the Blue, titled Into the Blue 2: The Reef.

Following “he Reef, the in-demand actress immediately began filming numerous critically acclaimed independent films.  Laura then landed a main role in a miniseries that was the SyFy channel’s re-launch of Philip José Farmer’s Riverworld.  While shooting Riverworld, Laura also booked a series regular place for ABC’s sci-fi series “V” amid Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) and Scott Wolf (Party of Five).

After V, she secured five feature films in a row: the psychological thriller The Entitled, starring Ray Liotta, followed by McG’s romantic comedy This Means War, the lead in Desperately Seeking Santa, and Broken Trust.

Laura has been developing and producing films, and she has discovered another passion for working behind the camera.  She co-wrote, executive produced, and starred in the 2019 film festival hit Age Of Dysphoria with Canadian great Gordon Pinsent.

Laura just made her directing debut with the short film ‘My Soul to Take,’ which she also wrote and stars Colm Feore.  She shot five feature films and an anticipated guest appearance on the critically acclaimed series Handmaid’s Tale during the 2020 pandemic.  Laura wrapped the lead role in a feature film thriller titled Black Bags in Oklahoma at the beginning of 2022, and her production company Lava Works Entertainment Inc. currently has three films in development.

Facts and Trivia

Laura, in addition to acting on camera, is an excellent voice actor, and she will continue her superhero career by voicing Mary Jane in a Spiderman video game, her second voiceover gig after three episodes of Family Guy.  She recently narrated a short film titled The Hundred-Year-Old Whale, educating audiences about the species.

Laura has also made her first children’s book available internationally through Amazon.  Super-Duper Deelia makes her debut as a published author in the children’s literature arena.
