Fallout’s Ella Purnell Is Our Friday Feature

This one is for the geeks out there who enjoy binge-watching a series based on a video game.  Oh, yes…  Very much like us here.

Ella Purnell is so gorgeous in Fallout, don’t you think?  I’ll answer for you…  Yes, she is and that is the reason why she is here.  And we’ve been crushing on her since the first episode.  Yeah, she is sometimes annoying in the series but she is just gorgeous you’d overlook that.

Who is Ella Purnell

Ella is an English actress best known for playing the younger version of the titular character in the 2014 film Maleficent and The Legend of Tarzan in 2016.  She began her career as a child actress in West End plays and films, including Never Let Me Go (2010), Intruders (2011), and Maleficent (2014).  Her other film credits include Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016), Churchill (2017), and Army of the Dead (2021).

Ella has appeared in several television shows, including the historical serial Belgravia (2020), the thriller Yellowjackets (2021-2023), and the post-apocalyptic drama Fallout (2024-present).  She also plays Jinx in Arcane (2021–present) and Gwyndala in Star Trek: Prodigy (2021).

Ella just got the Madame Figaro Rising Star Award at the 2024 Canneseries Festival in recognition of her fascinating and diversified career to date.  She stars as ‘Lucy MacLean’ in Fallout, Prime Video’s post-apocalyptic series and the platform’s most popular show.

Her Early Life

Ella Purnell was born September 17, 1996, in London.  She grew up in Bethnal Green.  Ella attended Bethnal Green Montessori, Forest School, the City of London School for Girls, and the Young Actors Theatre in Islington.  She also took weekly acting, singing, and dance training at the Sylvia Young Theatre School and was represented by the company’s in-house talent agency.

Career Journey

Ella Purnell was cast in a London West End theatrical performance of the musical Oliver! when she was 12 years old while attending the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

In 2008, she beat out hundreds of other girls for the part of Oliver! at London’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Nearing the conclusion of her stay in Oliver!  She earned the role of Young Ruth (played by Keira Knightley as an adult) in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, a film based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel.  It was released in 2010 and received great reviews.  She was then cast as Kayleigh in Gustavo Ron’s Ways to Live Forever, based on Sally Nicholls’ book, and Mia in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s film Intruders.  Screen International chose Ella as one of the ten UK Stars of Tomorrow.  She also starred in the BBC HD video short Candy in June 2011.

Ella played Dolce in the 2013 movie Kick-Ass 2.  The next year, she acted in the independent film Wildlike, which won multiple film festival awards, and she played the adolescent version of Angelina Jolie‘s eponymous role in Disney’s Maleficent.  In 2016, she starred in Tim Burton’s film version of Ransom Riggs’ novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.  In 2017, she portrayed Mia in Access All Areas.  Ella later participated in the historical drama film Churchill, where she played Winston Churchill’s secretary Helen Garrett.

Ella played Hester Argyll in the BBC miniseries Ordeal by Innocence, which was based on Agatha Christie’s novel of the same name.  Later the same year, Ella played the lead in the Starz series Sweetbitter, which was based on Stephanie Danler’s novel of the same name.  She played Tess, a naive 22-year-old who moves to New York City to start a new life and becomes immersed in the world of fine dining.  Ella starred as Lady Maria Grey in Julian Fellowes’ period drama Belgravia, which was co-produced by ITV and Epix.  In 2021, she began her role as Jackie in the Showtime drama series Yellowjackets.  Later that year, she voiced Gwyn in Netflix’s animated shows Star Trek: Prodigy and Jinx.

Facts and Trivia

Ella was 18 years old when she finished school and considered quitting performing in favor of attending university and becoming a writer, therapist, or teacher.  So she resolved to travel the world for a year to “find herself”. After her “traveling and drinking” spell, she was offered a role in Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.  She accepted the chance because she wanted to work with Wes Anderson or Tim Burton.  She described her decision to continue performing as “bittersweet at first because it felt like a lost opportunity of a different path in life, but looking back, she was glad she continued her acting career”.

In 2010, Screen International named him one of its top up-and-coming UK Stars of Tomorrow.  She was also chosen by Angelina Jolie to play a teen version of the Oscar-winning actress in Maleficent.
