If Timeless Tuesday had a hall of fame, Malaika Aurora would be making a very strong case for a permanent spot. It’s genuinely hard to believe she’s in her early 50s, because she’s out here making the calendar look more like a polite suggestion than an actual rule. Effortlessly glamorous and impossible to ignore, Malaika has the kind of presence that demands attention. Honestly, leaving her out of this feature would have been the real crime. So, let’s give this timeless beauty the spotlight she has more than earned.
Who is Malaika Arora
Some celebrities wear a lot of hats. Malaika Arora seems to have collected the entire wardrobe. Really. Actress, dancer, model, video jockey, television personality, producer—you name it, she’s probably done it, and done it with remarkable style.
A familiar face in Hindi-language cinema since the late 1990s, Malaika has built a career that stretches well beyond traditional acting roles. She’s delivered unforgettable performances in iconic music videos, including Chaiyya Chaiyya (1998), Gur Naalo Ishq Mitha (1998), Maahi Ve (2002), Kaal Dhamaal (2005), and the wildly popular Munni Badnaam Hui (2010). If there’s a list of Bollywood’s most memorable dance numbers, chances are she’s already on it.
Her screen credits also include films such as Kaante (2002) and EMI (2008), while television audiences know her as a judge on hit reality competitions like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and India’s Best Dancer. Somewhere along the way, she also earned a reputation as one of India’s leading fitness icons, making the rest of us wonder if she secretly negotiated for extra hours in the day.
Her Early Life
Malaika Arora was born on October 23, 1973, in Thane, Maharashtra, and was given a name that set the bar pretty high from day one. “Malaika” comes from the Swahili word for “angel”—not exactly subtle, but she has spent much of her career living up to it.
She comes from a diverse family background. Her mother, Joyce Polycarp, is a Malayali Christian, while her father, Anil Arora, was a Punjabi Hindu from the border town of Fazilka who served in the Indian Merchant Navy. When Malaika was 11, her parents divorced, and she moved to Chembur with her younger sister, Amrita, and their mother, who raised the girls as a single parent. Despite the separation, her father maintained a respectful relationship with the family, proving that not every chapter has to end on a sour note.
Malaika completed her secondary education at Swami Vivekanand School in Chembur and lived in Borla, within Chembur’s Sindhi Society, before stepping into the world of modeling. It turned out to be a wise career move—although it’s safe to assume the school yearbook didn’t predict she’d become one of India’s most recognizable entertainers.
Career Journey
Malaika Arora’s career in entertainment began long before social media made everyone a host. She was chosen as one of MTV India’s original video jockeys when the channel launched, interviewing celebrities and hosting popular shows such as Club MTV. She later teamed up with Cyrus Broacha to co-host Love Line and Style Check, proving she had the personality to match her on-screen presence.
From there, modeling came calling. Malaika appeared in numerous advertising campaigns before making a splash in music videos, including Bally Sagoo’s Gur Naalo Ishq Mitha opposite Jas Arora. Then came 1998 and a little song called Chaiyya Chaiyya. Dancing atop a moving train in Dil Se… isn’t exactly an everyday commute, but the performance became one of Bollywood’s most iconic musical moments and cemented her place in pop culture.
She struck gold again in 2010 with Munni Badnaam Hui from Dabangg, produced by her former husband, Arbaaz Khan. The song became a massive hit, and the following year, on March 12, 2011, Malaika led 1,235 participants in a choreographed performance of Munni Badnaam Hui, helping set a world record. Not bad for what started as a dance number.
Beyond film, Malaika became a familiar face in the advertising world, serving as Taiwan Excellence’s celebrity endorser in 2012 and promoting Dabur’s 30-Plus. Interestingly, despite her success on screen, she has said that acting was never something she actively wanted to pursue. Even so, she continued making memorable appearances, including a cameo in Farah Khan’s Happy New Year (2014). She also performed live alongside Atif Aslam, Shaan, and Bipasha Basu during concert shows at Birmingham’s LG Arena and London’s O2 Arena, adding international stages to an already impressive résumé.
Television has been another constant throughout her career. Malaika joined the judging panel for Nach Baliye when it premiered in 2005 and returned for its second season in 2006, where she often performed energetic dance numbers to inspire the contestants—or gently remind them what they were aiming for. She later judged Zara Nachke Dikha and became a judge on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in 2010.
Her television journey has continued ever since. Malaika has served as a judge on India’s Got Talent, hosted and judged MTV Supermodel of the Year in 2019, and joined the judging panel of India’s Best Dancer in 2020. At this point, if there’s a dance competition on Indian television, there’s a fair chance Malaika has either judged it, hosted it, or completely stolen the show.
Facts and Trivia
Malaika Arora met actor, producer, and television personality Arbaaz Khan during an advertisement shoot, proving that not every successful casting call ends when the cameras stop rolling. The two married and, throughout their relationship, she was widely known as Malaika Arora Khan.
After years together, the couple announced their separation on March 28, 2016, citing compatibility issues. Their divorce was finalized on May 11, 2017. They share a son, Arhaan Khan, who was born on November 9, 2002. Following the divorce, Malaika retained primary custody of Arhaan, while Arbaaz received visitation rights under the settlement reached in the Bandra Family Court. During her marriage, she was also part of one of Bollywood’s most recognizable families, with Salman Khan and Sohail Khan as her brothers-in-law and legendary screenwriter Salim Khan as her father-in-law.
Life moved on, and so did the headlines. Malaika began a relationship with actor Arjun Kapoor in 2016, with the couple eventually parting ways in 2024. In early 2025, she entered a relationship with actor Dino Morea. Somewhere between all of that, she also adopted a vegan lifestyle in 2020, adding another chapter to her ever-evolving journey.
Not every headline, however, has been a glamorous one. In April 2022, Malaika was involved in a three-car collision on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway while returning home from an event. She was taken to Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai, where she received stitches before making her recovery. In 2024, she also experienced a deeply personal loss when her stepfather, Anil Mehta, died by suicide. Through life’s celebrations and setbacks alike, Malaika has remained one of Bollywood’s most recognizable public figures, continuing to face each new chapter with resilience and grace.
