A man meeting a younger woman should dress as a well-kept version of his own age. The age difference itself is ordinary in Britain. Census 2021 figures from the Office for National Statistics show the man is older in 68.0% of opposite-sex married couples and 62.1% of cohabiting couples, and about a third of each group have an age difference of 5 years or more. A gap of 10 or 15 years attracts a glance at most. Clothes chosen to disguise it attract a longer look, because they suggest the man is uneasy about a fact everyone at the table can already see.
The 5-Second Judgement of Fit
A tailor can take in a jacket at the waist and shorten the sleeves until a centimetre of shirt cuff shows. Trousers that gather at the ankle can be tapered or hemmed, and a shirt collar should close without pulling, with room for a finger inside it. Alterations of this kind cost a fraction of the price of new clothing.
Fit is read quickly, which is why the alterations are worth it. A 2013 study in the Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management, run at the University of Hertfordshire, showed 274 participants pictures of a man in 2 suits that differed only in small details. The first suit was made to measure and the second came off the peg. The man’s face was blurred and each picture stayed on screen for 5 seconds at most, yet the made-to-measure version received higher ratings for confidence, success, salary and flexibility. Ratings of trustworthiness did not change.
Men whose weight has changed in the past few years gain the most from a visit to the tailor, because their wardrobe was fitted to a body they no longer have. Collars and waistbands are usually the first places the change shows.
Colour and Perceived Status
Navy and charcoal combine with almost anything in a wardrobe, and a single stronger colour, in a knit or a scarf, is enough for a dinner. Pattern works on similar lines, with small checks and fine stripes easier to wear well than large prints.
The case for wearing red rests on a 2010 paper from the University of Rochester, published by the American Psychological Association. Across 7 experiments with participants in the United States, England, Germany and China, women rated men shown in red, or framed against red, as higher in status and more sexually desirable. A 2016 re-examination in Psychonomic Bulletin and Review failed to reproduce the result, which leaves a red jumper as a weak strategy.
Relationship Choices Across an Age Gap
A date with a younger woman covers several kinds of relationship. It may be a first outing after a divorce, a slow courtship with someone met through work, or dating a sugar baby who has been direct about the relationship she wants. The couple settle which one it is, ideally before the first evening.
Clothing changes very little between those cases. In each of them the woman is looking at fit and at how well the cut suits a man of his age, and the right level of formality depends on the venue.
Shoe Condition and Stranger Judgements
A date will look at his shoes and form a view, and research suggests the view has some basis. Researchers at the University of Kansas asked 63 students to examine photographs of 208 pairs of shoes, each belonging to a volunteer whose personality had been measured, and published the results in the Journal of Research in Personality in 2012. From the pictures alone, raters could judge a stranger’s age, gender, income and attachment anxiety with some accuracy.
Scuffed toes and worn-down heels count against him, and a cobbler or a tin of polish can deal with both before the weekend. Leather shoes or clean suede boots suit most restaurants and bars. White trainers worn with a blazer are common among men in their twenties, and on a man of 50 they tend to look like an attempt to appear younger.
Belts and watch straps should agree with the shoes, brown leather with brown and black with black. A slim leather strap is a calmer choice for dinner than a large steel sports watch, and it will not catch on a shirt cuff every time he reaches for a glass.
Grooming at Close Range
Use 2 sprays of fragrance on the skin before dressing. A heavier application reaches the next table, and fragrance itself has a measurable effect on how a man is judged. In a 2021 study in PLOS One, researchers collected sweat samples from 32 men, with and without fragrance applied. A group of 62 women then rated videos of male contestants from a television dating show while smelling the samples. When the sample contained fragrance, the men on screen were rated more attractive and higher in self-esteem.
Grooming covers what she will see at close range. Nails should be trimmed and eyebrows kept tidy. A haircut a few days old looks settled, where one done that morning still shows the clipper line along the neck and around the ears.
Clothes to Leave at Home
Julia Twigg and Shinobu Majima interviewed 24 men aged 58 to 85 in Kent for a study published in Ageing and Society. Unlike the women in Twigg’s earlier research, the men did not describe a changing room moment, the point at which a person tries an item on and decides it is now too young for them. Dress was not something most of them saw in terms of age at all. It follows that a man is unlikely to have checked his own wardrobe with his age in mind, and the clothes he bought for a younger version of himself are still in use.
Graphic T-shirts, slogan caps and heavily distressed denim belong to a younger peer group. Wearing them to meet a younger woman invites the comparison he would prefer to avoid. Very tight trousers and oversized streetwear bought to follow trends have the same problem, and both date quickly. A plain knit and dark jeans in a straight cut achieve a relaxed look without any of that. The woman across the table will take them as the choices of a man who knows what suits him.
The Evening Before
Lay out the full outfit the evening before and put it on. Sit down in the trousers, because a waistband that is comfortable standing can dig in through a 2-hour dinner. Check the shoes by a window in daylight, where scuffs hidden by a bedroom lamp become visible. Look up the venue as well, and dress one step smarter than its regular customers. Any problem with the clothes will show up in that half hour at home, where it can still be fixed at no cost to the evening.
