Yes, we’ve been featuring a lot of Indian stars lately. But honestly, can you blame us? When the country keeps producing beauties like Sara Ali Khan, our hands are pretty much tied.
Sara has that rare combination of class, elegance, and the kind of photogenic face that makes scrolling past her pictures feel unnecessarily difficult. One photo becomes five, five becomes ten, and suddenly you’ve forgotten why you picked up your phone in the first place.
So, before the staring session gets completely out of hand, let’s get to know the Bollywood beauty behind all that effortless glamour.
Who is Sara Ali Khan
Sara Ali Khan is an Indian actress who primarily works in Hindi films. Born into the prominent Pataudi family, she is the daughter of actors Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan, so Bollywood was hardly a distant concept in the family. She has received a Filmfare Award and was featured on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list in 2019.
Before stepping in front of the camera, Khan graduated from Columbia University with a degree in history and political science. She made her acting debut in 2018 with two commercially successful films: the romantic drama Kedarnath and the action comedy Simmba. Her performance in Kedarnath earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Not a bad way to start.
Her filmography has since included a few poorly received projects, but Khan has also earned praise for her work in the drama Atrangi Re (2021). She returned to commercial success with the romantic comedies Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023) and Metro… In Dino (2025), proving that her career can handle a little turbulence without losing momentum.
Her Early Life
Sara Ali Khan was born Sara Sultan on August 12, 1995, in Bombay, Maharashtra, to actors Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh. Her father is the son of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore, while her mother is the daughter of socialite Rukhsana Sultana and Indian Army officer Shivinder Singh Virk. With that family tree, a career in Bollywood was never exactly a surprising plot twist.
Khan is of Pashtun, Assamese, and Bengali descent on her father’s side and Punjabi descent on her mother’s. She was raised Muslim and is a great-granddaughter of Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi and Sajida Sultan. She is also the niece of Soha Ali Khan and Saba Ali Khan. Her younger brother, Ibrahim Ali Khan, is an actor as well, while she has two half-brothers from her father’s second marriage to actress Kareena Kapoor.
Sara made her first appearance in an advertisement at just four years old. According to Saif, watching Aishwarya Rai perform on stage in Chicago inspired his daughter to consider acting as a career. Her parents divorced in 2004, when Sara was nine, and Amrita was granted legal guardianship of Sara and Ibrahim. Although the family went through a difficult period, Sara and her father eventually rebuilt their relationship. Saif has even described them as being more like friends than father and daughter.
Sara has also spoken warmly about her relationship with her stepmother, Kareena Kapoor, saying she admired Kapoor’s professionalism and wanted to learn from it. Blended-family diplomacy, but make it Bollywood.
As a teenager, Khan struggled with her weight and followed a strict exercise routine to get fit. She has also spoken publicly about being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, which she has linked to her weight gain.
Academically, Khan took a different route before committing to acting. She studied history and political science at Columbia University in New York and graduated in 2016 after completing the degree in just three years. She then spent the remaining time of her studies focusing on weight training before returning to India.
From a very Bollywood childhood to an Ivy League education and a serious fitness transformation, Khan’s early life was certainly not short on plotlines. The movie career was still waiting in the wings.
Career Journey
Sara Ali Khan made her acting debut in 2018 with Abhishek Kapoor’s romantic drama Kedarnath, playing a Hindu woman who falls in love with a Muslim porter. To prepare for the role, Khan worked on her Hindi vocabulary with help from Rajput, making sure her performance sounded as convincing as it looked. The film received mixed reviews, but Khan’s performance was widely praised. Kedarnath went on to become a commercial success, earning more than ₹960 million worldwide and winning Khan the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female. Not a bad first day at the Bollywood office.
Just weeks later, Khan appeared opposite Ranveer Singh in Rohit Shetty’s action film Simmba, loosely based on the Telugu film Temper (2015). She began filming the project while production on Kedarnath was temporarily suspended, creating a scheduling headache big enough to inspire a legal subplot. Abhishek Kapoor eventually sued Khan, but the dispute was settled out of court after she agreed to divide her time between both productions. The gamble paid off commercially: Simmba earned around ₹4 billion worldwide and became the third-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2018.
Khan’s next major release was Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal (2020), a spiritual successor to his 2009 film of the same name. She starred opposite Kartik Aaryan as a young woman dealing with a troubled past. Unfortunately, the romance failed to connect with audiences and became a box-office bomb. Later that year, she teamed up with Varun Dhawan for the comedy Coolie No. 1, a remake of David Dhawan’s 1995 film. While the Amazon Prime Video release attracted strong viewership, critics were considerably less impressed, to put it politely.
In 2021, Khan took on a more emotionally demanding role in Aanand L. Rai’s drama Atrangi Re, playing a woman experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. The film received mixed reviews, but the role gave Khan another opportunity to move beyond straightforward romantic-comedy territory.
She returned to screens in 2023 with Gaslight, a mystery thriller filmed in just 36 days and released on Disney+ Hotstar. It was her first film to receive a theatrical release since Love Aaj Kal in 2020 and, against expectations, became a commercial success. Apparently, a little mystery was exactly what the box office ordered.
In 2024, Khan appeared in two very different projects. She joined an ensemble cast for Homi Adajania’s murder mystery Murder Mubarak on Netflix before taking on the lead role in Ae Watan Mere Watan, an Amazon Prime Video biographical drama about freedom fighter Usha Mehta.
Her first release of 2025 was Sky Force, an action film set during the Indo-Pakistani air war of 1965. Khan played the pregnant wife of a missing Air Force officer, and the film became a moderate commercial success.
In 2026, she starred opposite Ayushmann Khurrana in Mudassar Aziz’s romantic comedy Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, playing one of two women suspected of having an affair with a married man. The film, however, struggled at the box office.
From a breakout debut and blockbuster action comedy to dramas, mysteries, biopics, and a few films that the box office would rather forget, Khan’s career has already covered plenty of ground. The woman clearly enjoys keeping things interesting.
Facts and Trivia
Sara Ali Khan has built quite the profile beyond her film career. In 2019, she appeared on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list, ranking 66th with an estimated annual income of ₹57.5 million. The following year, Eastern Eye included her in its “Dynamic Dozen for the Decade” list. She was also ranked ninth on Rediff.com’s list of “The Best Actresses” in 2021 and seventh on GQ India’s list of the 30 Most Influential Young Indians in 2022. Apparently, the rankings department has been keeping busy.
Khan has also made regular appearances on The Times’ 50 Most Desirable Women list, ranking 30th in 2018, 27th in 2019, and 24th in 2020. Not exactly a bad run.
Her endorsement portfolio is just as busy. Khan has represented brands including Fanta, Puma, Pepsi, Veet, and Kurkure. In 2022, she took things a step further by becoming an equity partner in The Souled Store, a pop-culture apparel brand. Because apparently starring in movies and posing for campaigns wasn’t enough—she wanted a piece of the business, too.
Khan has also supported several charitable causes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she donated to Sonu Sood’s foundation to help purchase oxygen cylinders for people in need. In 2021, she marked her birthday by partnering with the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation to support children who had been orphaned as a result of the pandemic.
From magazine lists and major brand campaigns to business investments and charitable work, Khan has managed to keep her name busy both on and off screen. The résumé, it seems, has no interest in taking a day off.
