Helena is a Danish supermodel who rose to prominence as a ‘Victoria’s Secret Angel’. Because of her success as a beauty queen, people in the industry became aware of her. Helena Christensen was born on December 25, 1968. She is of Peruvian and Danish descent. She has stated that growing up in Denmark with a South American mother was a formative experience for her.
Helena is multilingual, having grown up speaking Danish, Spanish, and English. Despite being bullied at school for it, she is grateful for the opportunities these skills have provided her.
Career Journey
In 1983, she entered a beauty pageant by mistake, thinking it was a charity fashion show. She won it when she was 16 years old. In 1986, at the age of 18, she was crowned Miss Denmark. This compelled her to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, which was held in Panama the same year.
She appeared on the cover of the British edition of ‘Vogue’ magazine in March 1990. This would be the first of six cover appearances. She was one of the original ‘Victoria’s Secret Angels,’ along with Tyra Banks, Stephanie Seymour, Karen Mulder, and Daniela Pestova. Throughout the 1990s, she worked with this company in print, commercials, and on the catwalk.
In 1991, she co-starred in Chris Isaak’s music video for “Wicked Game,” which was a hit, ranking fourth on MTV’s ‘Sexiest Video of All-Time’ and thirteenth on VH1’s 100 Greatest Videos. Christensen and her longtime friend Leif Sigersen founded ‘Christensen & Sigersen’ in 2008. They had previously run a store called ‘Butik’ in the West Village and were successful business partners. They started designing vintage-inspired clothes for the new label and selling them in Denmark.
In 2008-2009, she opened her second photography gallery, ‘Far From, Close,’ to benefit the educational program ‘Chernobyl Children’s Project International.’
