She is probably one of the hottest in the K-pop world right now. And it’s impossible that you have never come across here at least once in your browsing or your social media news feed. She is really, really friggin’ famous. She, my friend, is Jennie Kim. Most famous for being a part of the supergroup Blackpink.
Jennie, yup, is multi-talented… she can sing, dance, act, everything. But the reason why she is our Friday Feature is her looks. She is just sizzling hot!
Who is Jennie Kim
Jennie Kim, known to the world simply as Jennie (or by her ultra-glam stage name Jennie Ruby Jane), is a South Korean singer, rapper, songwriter, and actress who’s basically done it all. Born in South Korea, she packed her bags for New Zealand in 2004, only to return home six years later and casually ace her YG Entertainment audition in 2010.
Fast forward a few years, and Jennie exploded into global fame as part of BLACKPINK, the powerhouse girl group that debuted in August 2016 and went on to become one of the best-selling acts in K-pop history.
In 2018, she decided it was time to go solo—literally. Her debut single, “SOLO,” shot straight to the top of South Korea’s Circle Digital Chart and the U.S. Billboard World Digital Songs chart. Then came her first studio album, Ruby (2025), which sold over a million copies worldwide and tied for the highest-charting album by a Korean solo artist on the UK Albums Chart. Not bad for a debut.
Jennie also dipped her toes into acting, starring in HBO’s The Idol (2023) under her stage name Jennie Ruby Jane, proving she can command the screen just as well as the stage.
With a trophy shelf that includes four MAMA Awards, a Circle Chart Music Award, a Golden Disc Award, and even a Billboard Women in Music Award—where she became the first Korean soloist ever to win—Jennie’s influence stretches far beyond music.
Oh, and she’s also the most-followed Korean on Instagram, a global Chanel ambassador, and affectionately nicknamed the “Human Chanel.” Stylish, talented, and effortlessly cool, Jennie’s basically the definition of main character energy.
Her Early Life
Jennie Kim was born on January 16, 1996, and grew up as an only child. For a long time, people thought she was born in the fancy Seoul neighborhood of Cheongdam-dong, but Jennie cleared things up on Apartment 404, revealing that she was actually born in Bundang, Seongnam. So yes, even her birthplace has plot twists.
She attended Cheongdam Elementary School in Seoul before heading off to New Zealand. The move happened after a family trip to Australia and New Zealand when she was eight — her mom asked if she liked it there, and Jennie simply said “yes.” A year later, that “yes” turned into a one-way ticket. She enrolled at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland, living with a homestay family and learning English, something she even talked about on the 2006 MBC documentary English, Must Change to Survive. Back then, she dreamed not of fame, but of becoming a ballet dancer. After intermediate school, she continued her studies at ACG Parnell College.
It was during her time in New Zealand that Jennie first discovered K-pop—especially the music coming out of YG Entertainment. Her mom later suggested moving to Florida when Jennie was 14 so she could become a lawyer or teacher, but Jennie wasn’t sold on the idea (the vision of living alone and doing something she didn’t love? Hard pass). Instead, she convinced her family to let her move back to South Korea in 2010, where she attended Cheongdam Middle School and decided to chase her musical dreams.
That same year, she auditioned for YG Entertainment, nervously performing Rihanna’s “Take a Bow.” Jennie later admitted to High Cut Korea that she was so shy during the audition she could barely introduce herself. Even so, YG saw her potential and brought her on as a trainee. The company encouraged her to lean into rapping, especially since most of her covers featured rap parts — plus, she was the only trainee fluent in English at the time.
Today, Jennie speaks Korean and English fluently, has basic Japanese, and has even picked up some French — just enough, presumably, to order croissants like a pro or charm a Parisian fashion crowd.
Career Journey
Jennie’s rise to fame didn’t start with a bang, but with a question: “Who’s that girl?”
On April 10, 2012, YG Entertainment posted a mysterious photo of her on their official blog with that exact caption. The internet, being the internet, went wild. Within hours, Jennie’s picture was everywhere, and she was dubbed the “Mystery Girl” — the trainee everyone suddenly needed to know about.
A few months later, on August 30, YG dropped a YouTube video titled “YG Trainee – Jennie Kim,” where she coolly covered B.o.B.’s “Strange Clouds” featuring Lil Wayne. If the teaser photo made people curious, this video sealed the deal — Jennie was one to watch. Just days later, on September 1, she made her first public appearance not as a singer, but as the lead actress in G-Dragon’s music video for “That XX” from his One of a Kind EP. Talk about a debut with star power.
Then came August 8, 2016 — the day BLACKPINK officially arrived. Jennie debuted alongside Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa with their single album Square One, featuring the now-iconic double hits “Boombayah” and “Whistle.” According to Jisoo, Jennie naturally took on the role of team decision-maker, the one who helped keep things running smoothly (and stylishly, of course).
Fast forward to October 2018, and Jennie was ready to shine solo. After weeks of cryptic teasers and speculation, YG confirmed she’d be releasing her first single album, Solo, led by the track of the same name. Before the official release, Jennie gave fans a surprise — she premiered “SOLO” live during BLACKPINK’s In Your Area tour stop in Seoul on November 10, two days before it dropped worldwide.
The song instantly became a smash, and by 2019, Jennie was taking her solo stardom global. On April 12 and 19, she made history as the first Korean solo artist to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, performing “SOLO” during BLACKPINK’s set. Her performance earned rave reviews — Billboard even listed it among “The 10 Best Things We Saw at Coachella 2019,” calling it “mind-blowing” and “stunning.” Not bad for someone who once started as a “mystery girl.”
Acting Career
In 2023, Jennie stepped into a brand-new spotlight — acting. Using her stage name Jennie Ruby Jane, she made her screen debut in HBO’s The Idol, a drama created by and starring The Weeknd.
Now, let’s be honest — The Idol didn’t exactly win over the critics. The show was panned and cancelled after just one season. But while the series itself took some hits, Jennie came out shining. Playing Dyanne, a backup dancer and loyal friend to pop star Jocelyn (portrayed by Lily-Rose Depp), Jennie quickly became one of the show’s most talked-about elements.
In fact, a short clip of her performance went viral — so viral that it reportedly outperformed the show’s actual premiere views on HBO. Pretty awesome for a “first role,” right?
Advocacies
Jennie’s heart for giving back is just as big as her global fanbase. Since 2018, she’s been part of the Cheongdam Woori Animal Hospital’s “Protect Our Family” campaign, which focuses on protecting pets and rescuing abandoned dogs — a perfect cause for a self-confessed animal lover.
In November 2023, she attended the 18th Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign Charity Event, helping raise funds for cancer screening, surgeries, and treatments for low-income patients. Then, in May 2024, Jennie made a generous ₩100 million (about US$74,400) donation to Habitat for Humanity Korea, in the name of BLINK, BLACKPINK’s devoted fan club. The donation went toward building an alternative school for young people — a thoughtful gesture that gave back in her fans’ name.
Her generosity kept going strong. During her U.S. tour dates for The Ruby Experience in March 2025, Jennie directed proceeds to fire recovery efforts and local firefighters in Los Angeles, following the devastating January wildfires. That same month, she also donated ₩100 million to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association, supporting wildfire relief in Ulsan and the North and South Gyeongsang Provinces. Her contribution went straight to practical aid — emergency support, relief supplies, and temporary shelters for displaced residents.
And she didn’t stop there. In May 2025, Jennie made another ₩100 million donation, this time to the Seoul National University College of Medicine Development Fund, reflecting her interest in supporting future doctors. The college announced plans to use her gift to enhance medical education and research, with a focus on nurturing skilled, empathetic healthcare professionals.
In short: when Jennie’s not breaking records or turning heads onstage, she’s quietly out there making the world a better place — one thoughtful donation at a time.
Facts and Trivia
In March 2024, Jennie teamed up with American rapper Matt Champion of Brockhampton fame for the dreamy track “Slow Motion.” The song dropped on March 8 and appeared on Champion’s debut studio album, Mika’s Laundry. Their collaboration quickly became a fan favourite — a perfect blend of her sultry vocals and his mellow flow.
A few months later, on September 8, news broke that Jennie had officially signed as a solo artist with Columbia Records, in partnership with her own label, Odd Atelier. A month later, on October 11, she dropped “Mantra”, the lead single from her highly anticipated debut studio album, Ruby.
Keeping fans on their toes, Jennie released the music video for “Zen” on January 25, 2025, followed shortly after by “Love Hangover,” her collaboration with Dominic Fike, which came out on January 31. The track made waves internationally, peaking at #29 on the Billboard Global 200, #35 on the Circle Digital Chart, and #96 on the Billboard Hot 100 — proving her solo era was off to a strong, stylish start.
Jennie’s love affair with fashion started long before the fame. As a child, she would pore over fashion magazines and raid her mother’s closet for vintage treasures. In an interview with Elle Indonesia, she recalled, “I remember when I was little, I’d look through my mother’s wardrobe and search for whatever vintage Chanel I could find.” It’s no wonder she’s been called the “Human Chanel” ever since.
In January 2018, Jennie officially became the new muse for Chanel Korea Beauty, shooting her first pictorial for Harper’s Bazaar Korea. By October that same year, she was named a global ambassador for the brand and made her debut appearance at Paris Fashion Week as a Korean representative — and, of course, as the picture of effortless elegance.
Jennie’s influence extended beyond Chanel, too. On May 18, 2021, she became the face of Calvin Klein’s Spring 2021 Drop 02 collection, a collaboration with designer Heron Preston. Fast forward to June 2025, and Vogue Korea reported that her capsule collection with Calvin Klein had generated a staggering $8.6 million in Media Impact Value (MIV) — proving her power in both music and fashion is unmatched.
Oh, and did we mention she’s worked behind the scenes too? In March 2021, Jennie took on the role of guest fashion editor for Vogue Korea. According to the magazine, she didn’t just pose for photos — she helped plan the entire concept, from styling to hair and makeup. Leave it to Jennie to blur the line between muse and creative director.
