Who is Sophie Cookson?

Sophie Cookson is an English actress best known for her role as Roxy Morton in the Matthew Vaughn-directed action spy comedy film ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service.’  She was chosen over actresses such as Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote to play Morton, and her performance earned her an Empire Award nomination for ‘Best Female Newcomer.’

Her Early Life

Sophie Louise Cookson was born to Marie and Colin Cookson on May 15, 1990, in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, England.  She and her younger brother were raised in Sussex, South East England.  She eventually relocated to Suffolk with her family and was enrolled at ‘Woodbridge School.’  Sophie showed an early interest in music and theatre. She joined ‘British Youth Music Theatre’ when she was 10 years old, and later went on to tour Japan with a theatre company.

Sophie quit acting after returning from Japan to study Arabic and art history.  She dropped out to attend the ‘Oxford School of Drama,’ however, because her passion for acting outweighed her desire to learn Arabic and art history.  During her senior year at the ‘Oxford Drama School,’ Cookson was cast as Grace Mohune in the TV miniseries ‘Moonfleet,’ based on John Meade Falkner’s novel of the same name.  Sophie studied drama at the Oxford School of Drama for three years before graduating in 2013.

Career Journey

Sophie was cast as Millie in the television film Unknown Heart.  In the same year, she was cast as Roxanne in the critically acclaimed action spy comedy film ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service.’ She received a nomination for ‘Best Female Newcomer’ at the ‘Empire Awards because of her performance in the said film.

Sophie’s reputation grew following her appearance in ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service,’ which led to her landing further film parts.  She was cast as Pippa in the American fantasy adventure film ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ in 2016.

In 2017, she played Sidney Pierce and appeared in ten episodes of the American web television series Gypsy.  Also in 2017, she was cast as Nicole Rawlins in Xavier Gens’ horror film ‘The Crucifixion,’ and she later reprised her role as Roxanne ‘Roxy’ Morton in ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle,’ a sequel to the 2014 film.  Sophie was also in a musical short film for the song ‘Pleader’ by the well-known British indie rock band ‘Alt-J.’

Sophie played young Joan Elizabeth Stanley in the 2018 British spy drama film ‘Red Joan’.  The movie had its world premiere at the ‘Toronto International Film Festival’ in Canada.  She then played Ona in Marius A. Markevicius-directed Lithuanian-American drama film ‘Ashes in the Snow.’

In 2018, Sophie was cast to play Johanna of Ghent in the Lee Tamahori-directed historical drama film ‘Emperor.’  She then played the title role in a TV mini-series titled ‘The Trial of Christine Keeler.’  In the same year, she was also cast to play an essential role in a satirical film titled ‘Greed.’

Sophie, in addition to appearing in films and television series, also has prominent roles in stage plays. In 2018, she starred as Dottie opposite Orlando Bloom in the play ‘Killer Joe,’ which was produced by the ‘Trafalgar Studios’ in London.

Facts and Trivia

Sophie’s mother is an English teacher, and her father works in finance.  Though her family initially opposed her acting career, they were persuaded when she began acting after graduating from the ‘Oxford School of Drama.’

Sophie was in a relationship with English actor Andrew Gower.  The couple were in 2014 but ended their engagement and decided to separate.

She then began dating actor Stephen Campbell Moore in 2018.  Sophie and Moore collaborated on the 2018 film ‘Red Joan,’ in which Moore played Max.

Sophie revealed in one of her interviews that if it hadn’t been for her acting career, she would have been an architect or a veterinary surgeon.  She adores animals and enjoys spending time with her pets. She also enjoys cooking and going for long walks in her spare time.
