Timeless Tuesday: The Timeless Women In 60th-Anniversery Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue

Our Timeless Tuesday special for this week is, of course, the Timeless ladies who posed for the 2024 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

Oh, yes, these women are deserving of such honor.  I mean, it’s Sports Illustrated.  Once featured there, you are already immortalized.  And this 60th-anniversary issue?  Man, they will be remembered even until the next ice age is over.  Okay, that may be an exaggeration but you damn well know what we mean.  And so here they are…

In no particular order of Timeless Hotness…

Gayle King

The three-time Emmy-winning journalist and CBS Mornings cohost makes her debut in the SI Swimsuit Issue this year.  Gayle King‘s debut film took her to the coast of Mexico and the Legends photo shoot in Hollywood, Florida.  She’s one of four cover models for the 60th-anniversary edition.

Gayle King was born December 28, 1954, in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  She graduated from the University of Maryland with a psychology degree.  Gayle started her career as a production assistant at WJZ-TV in Baltimore, where she met her long-time friend Oprah Winfrey.  She eventually worked as a reporter and anchor for several television stations, including WDAF-TV in Kansas City and WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, where she spent 18 years.

Gayle King has two children from her marriage to William Bumpus: Kirby and William Bumpus Jr.  She is also noted for her activism on a variety of social problems, including women’s rights and racial equality.  She is also a well-known character in the media, frequently praised for her interviewing abilities and journalistic ethics.

Christie Brinkley

Christie Brinkley, the first model to appear on three consecutive covers of the SI Swimsuit Issue, is a true brand legend.  The model is also an actress and entrepreneur, having launched her own beauty line and organic wine firm.  She returns to the magazine in 2024, having traveled to Hollywood, Florida, for the Legends picture shoot, which was taken by Yu Tsai.

In 1973, an American photographer discovered Christie Brinkley in a post office in Paris.  Beginning in the late 1970s, her appearances in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues propelled her to global recognition.  She was the first model to appear on three consecutive covers between 1979 and 1981.

Aside from modeling, Christie has developed a flourishing business empire that includes her own skincare line, Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare and a sparkling wine company called Bellissima Prosecco.  She is also an outstanding artist, having had her work displayed in a variety of places.  Throughout her long career, she has garnered various awards, including the American Heart Association’s “Heart of a Woman Award”.

Martha Stewart, 81, made brand history last year by being the oldest model to appear on the magazine’s cover.  The powerful businesswoman is the creator of her own lifestyle brand, a best-selling author, and an Emmy Award-winning television host.  This year, she returned to the SI Swimsuit set as a brand icon.  She posed for pictures with photographer Yu Tsai in Hollywood, Florida.

Martha Stewart began modeling in her teens and continued to do so throughout college to help pay for school.  Before becoming a household name in homemaking, Martha was a stockbroker on Wall Street in the 1960s.  Her debut novel, “Entertaining,” was published in 1982 and became a best-seller, setting the groundwork for her future success.  Martha began her magazine, “Martha Stewart Living,” in 1990, which was a huge success and helped her brand grow substantially.

Over her career, Martha has received multiple awards, including Daytime Emmy Awards for her television work.  Beyond her professional endeavors, Martha enjoys horseback riding, gardening, and restoring historic homes.

Molly Sims is an entrepreneur, actress, podcast host, YSE Beauty founder, and philanthropist, as well as a long-time model and member of the SI Swimsuit team.  She was a regular in the annual magazine during the early 2000s.  The mother of three has returned to participate in the Legends photo shoot commemorating their 60th anniversary.

Molly Sims was born May 25, 1973, in Murray, Kentucky.  She attended Vanderbilt University to study political science before dropping out to pursue a career in modeling.  She rose to prominence as a model in the late 1990s and early 2000s, working for major companies like CoverGirl, Old Navy, and Victoria’s Secret.  Molly appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue several times, most notably in 2006, when she wore a $30 million diamond-studded bikini created by Susan Rosen.

Molly moved into acting and is best recognized for her role as Delinda Deline in the NBC drama series “Las Vegas,” which lasted from 2003 to 2008.  She has hosted several television shows, including MTV’s “House of Style” and Lifetime’s “Project Accessory.”  She has also written two books, “The Everyday Supermodel: My Beauty, Fashion, and Wellness Secrets Made Simple” (2015) and “Everyday Chic: My Secrets for Entertaining, Organizing, and Decorating at Home” (2017).

Before Martha Stewart took the title in 2023, Maye Musk was the oldest cover model in SI Swimsuit history, posing for the 2022 issue at the age of 74.  Her 50-year career has included spectacular commercial campaigns, including becoming CoverGirl’s oldest spokesmodel at the age of 69, as well as numerous magazine appearances.

Maye Musk was born April 19, 1948, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.  She grew up in Pretoria, South Africa, where her family relocated when she was small.  Maye Musk started her modeling career at the age of 15.  She has been a model for more than 50 years, appearing in several fashion campaigns, periodicals, and advertising.

Maye’s modeling career took off in her 60s, when she became the face of several high-profile ads, including CoverGirl, making her one of the brand’s oldest models.  Maye Musk has been hailed as a modeling business trailblazer, breaking age restrictions and continuing to work as a model into her 70s, inspiring many with her youthful beauty and lively attitude.

Paulina Porizkova

Paulina Porizkova joined the SI Swimsuit family in 1983, with a feature in Jamaica.  The longstanding model, who has served as a judge on America’s Next Top Model and published two books, has been in the magazine multiple times since.  Her 2024 trip to Hollywood, Fla., to pose with photographer Yu Tsai marks her 11th SI Swimsuit feature in 41 years.

Paulina Porizkova was born on April 9, 1965, in Prostějov, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic).  Her family escaped Czechoslovakia following the Warsaw Pact’s invasion in 1968, and she grew up in Sweden.  Paulina’s modeling career began when she was found at the age of 13.  She swiftly soared to prominence, becoming one of the most recognized supermodels of the 1980s and 1990s.

Throughout her career, Paulina has been honored and recognized for her contributions to fashion and entertainment.  She is still a renowned and prominent figure in the industry.

Roshumba Williams has a long history with SI Swimsuit, having been the brand’s first African American model in 1990.  Throughout her modeling career, she has appeared on the covers of numerous publications and made a name for herself in film and reality television.

Roshumba Williams was born on August 1, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois.  She began modeling at a young age and quickly made a name for herself in the fashion industry.  Roshumba gained prominence in the 1990s as a top model.  She worked with many high-profile designers and brands, including Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, and Versace.

In addition to modeling, Roshumba has ventured into acting.  She has appeared in TV shows and films, including a role in the TV movie “The Last Dragon” (1985) and guest appearances on series like “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Roshumba is also an entrepreneur.  She has launched several ventures, including a line of beauty products and a fashion consulting business.

Nina Cash is a retired university associate dean and co-winner of the 2023 SI Swim Search.  The mother, grandmother, and philanthropist views modeling as an “encore career” and utilizes her platform to encourage women to accept their age. She came to Portugal with photographer Ben Watts to shoot her 2024 SI Swimsuit rookie story.

Nina is very interested in fashion and usually shows off her own style in her postings.  She frequently collaborates with fashion firms and designers.  She is well-known for offering beauty ideas and tutorials, which range from makeup routines to skincare advice, and her audience responds positively.

Nina highlights the value of fitness and a healthy lifestyle.  She frequently discusses her training routines, fitness tips, and healthy eating practices.

Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks made history in 1996 when she became the first Black woman to appear on the cover of SI Swimsuit, alongside model Valeria Mazza.  In addition to her acting, producing, writing, and entrepreneurial endeavors, she has appeared on the magazine’s cover and on its pages multiple times.  This year, she solidified her status as a brand legend by posing for the Legends photo shoot in Hollywood, Florida.

Tyra Banks began her modeling career at the age of fifteen.  She was the first African-American woman to be on the cover of GQ and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.  She was one of the original Victoria’s Secret Angels, and her involvement with the brand helped her become a household figure.

Tyra returned to modeling in 2019 to appear on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, her third appearance and proof of her long-term impact on the business.
