Here’s a podcast host and YouTuber who could probably turn “just one video” into a four-hour binge without breaking a sweat. Saffron Barker has that rare kind of screen presence that makes even ordinary conversation strangely captivating. She could be discussing her grocery list and somehow you’d still be paying attention.
She’s gorgeous, fit, and carries herself with the kind of confidence that suggests she could walk straight onto a superhero set and audition for Yelena Romanov without breaking stride. But before we get carried away, let’s get to know the woman behind the camera.
Who is Saffron Barker
Saffron Barker has turned being interesting on the internet into a full-blown career. The English influencer, YouTuber, and podcast host is best known for appearing on the seventeenth series of Strictly Come Dancing, competing in the fifth series of Celebrity Hunted, and finishing as a runner-up on The Celebrity Circle.
Her online popularity has clearly translated into serious influence, too. In September 2019, The Sunday Times named Barker its top female influencer. Not bad for someone whose job description basically involves convincing millions of people to keep watching.
Her Early Life
Saffron Barker was born on July 24, 2000, in Brighton, East Sussex, to Darren and Wendy Barker. She grew up with two biological brothers, Jed and Casey, as well as a foster brother, Jordan, giving the family no shortage of sibling energy.
She attended Longhill High School in Rottingdean before eventually building a career in the very different world of social media, television, and podcasting. From school corridors to the spotlight, Barker clearly had plans that extended well beyond the classroom.
Career Journey
Saffron Barker’s route to internet fame began with music. She was a member of the four-piece girl group Born2Blush alongside Libby Whitehouse, Jazmine Tiley, and Georgia McNamara. The group broke up when Barker was 15, leaving her “devastated” at the time. In hindsight, though, the setback turned out to be a pretty useful plot twist—it helped push her toward YouTube.
Barker launched her self-titled YouTube channel on July 30, 2015, sharing content centered on lifestyle, beauty, fashion, and fitness. She followed it with a second channel dedicated to vlogging on October 27 that year. Her main channel eventually grew to more than two million subscribers, proving that losing a girl band can occasionally lead to a much larger audience.
Her online success soon spilled into mainstream entertainment. In March 2017, Barker represented the United Kingdom as part of Nickelodeon’s first “Social Squad of Influencers” at the Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles. That April, she and her family hosted the six-episode series In My Day for TalkTalk TV. She also appeared in YouTube’s annual YouTube Rewind in December.
In March 2018, Barker returned to the Kids’ Choice Awards as Nickelodeon’s UK representative for its KCA PrankStars, a group of digital influencers assembled for a celebrity prank battle in Inglewood, California. Apparently, influencer duties sometimes come with the added responsibility of professionally annoying other people.
Her biggest television challenge arrived in 2019 when Barker joined the seventeenth series of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Announced as a contestant in August, she became only the second social media personality to compete on the show after Joe Sugg. Paired with professional dancer AJ Pritchard, Barker made it ten weeks into the competition before she and Pritchard were eliminated on November 24 following a dance-off against Karim Zeroual and Amy Dowden.
In March 2020, Barker appeared on a special The Greatest Dancer episode for Sport Relief as part of the dance troupe Don8. Her team defeated Team Encore, giving her another victory to add to the résumé.
Later that year, she was announced as one of 12 contestants on The Celebrity Circle. The show aired in March 2021, with Barker playing herself rather than pretending to be someone else. She ultimately finished as runner-up, while Lady Leshurr won after catfishing as rapper Big Narstie. So close, yet so very internet.
Barker continued her television run in 2022, appearing on BBC One’s The Wheel in January. The following month, she competed on E4’s The Real Dirty Dancing, where ten celebrities paired up to learn routines inspired by the iconic film. Barker was partnered with Lee Ryan, and the pair ultimately won the competition. Apparently, she really did have the time of her life.
In March 2023, Barker joined the fifth series of Channel 4’s Celebrity Hunted, teaming up with former University Challenge contestant and mathematician Bobby Seagull. With 48 hours remaining before reaching the extraction point, the pair decided to split up. Unfortunately for Barker, the strategy didn’t quite go according to plan. A member of the public gave the Hunters her exact whereabouts, and she was eventually caught. Internet fame, ballroom dancing, prank wars, and fugitive survival—Barker’s résumé was getting increasingly difficult to summarize in one sentence.
Facts and Trivia
Saffron Barker has never been particularly interested in sticking to just one corner of the entertainment world. In October 2017, she expanded into retail with a homeware, stationery, and loungewear collection with Irish fashion retailer Primark. She followed that with another loungewear range through In The Style in May 2020.
Podcasting eventually joined the résumé, too. In November 2020, Barker teamed up with her mother, Wendy, to host Mum Made Me Do It, a weekly podcast produced and distributed by Global Player. The show ran for eight months, with its final episode released on May 28, 2021. Barker returned to podcasting in October 2022 with Spotify Original Sex, Lies & DM Slides, co-hosted with close friend Anastasia Kingsnorth. The pair tackled everything from awkward encounters to romantic mishaps—the sort of conversations that probably make listeners feel better about their own DMs.
Barker has also used her platform for charity. In April 2019, she ran the London Marathon alongside her friend and personal trainer Ross Scrivener, raising money for Alzheimer’s Research UK and the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Revolution campaign. The cause was personal, as her great-grandfather died from Alzheimer’s disease when she was 11.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, Barker launched the #YouTube4NHSHeroes campaign, donating the advertising revenue from her weekly videos to the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 appeal. She encouraged fellow creators to participate in a “Super Saturday” fundraising effort by donating their own advertising revenue as well. That same month, she joined other UK-based influencers for the four-hour #WithMe YouTube livestream, which offered viewers tips on staying positive during lockdown while raising money for NHS Charities Together. AJ Pritchard and Curtis Pritchard also took part virtually.
In September 2020, Barker supported Digital Detox Day, encouraging people to step away from social media for 24 hours. Two months later, she helped surprise a 16-year-old autistic young carer from the Isle of Sheppey with a National Lottery Award through a video message. Apparently, even influencers occasionally have to remind everyone that the internet can be used for something other than scrolling.
Barker lives in Brighton, East Sussex, and previously lived in Woodingdean with her family. She chose not to attend college, instead deciding to concentrate on building her YouTube career. It seems that particular gamble worked out rather nicely.
On the personal side, Barker was previously in a relationship with rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit. The couple’s relationship ended in 2024, closing another chapter in the very public life of a woman who has spent much of her career growing up in front of an audience.
