Pooja Hegde has the kind of face that could make angels wonder if they’re being upstaged. Effortlessly beautiful and impossible to ignore, she’s one of those stars you simply can’t stop admiring. But don’t let the looks fool you—there’s plenty of talent behind the glamour. Pooja pairs her striking appearance with graceful dance moves that make challenging routines seem easy, while her acclaimed acting career and success as a beauty queen prove she’s much more than a pretty face. Beauty may grab the headlines, but talent keeps her there.
Who is Pooja Hegde
Pooja Hegde has built the kind of career that keeps her passport—and probably her shooting schedule—constantly busy. Working across Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil cinema, she has become one of the highest-paid actresses in South Indian films, collecting four SIIMA Awards along the way, as well as four Filmfare Awards South nominations.
Before she was lighting up movie screens, Pooja competed in the 2010 Miss Universe India pageant. Two years later, she made her acting debut in the Tamil superhero film Mugamoodi (2012). Telugu audiences quickly took notice thanks to Oka Laila Kosam and Mukunda (both 2014), before DJ: Duvvada Jagannadham (2017) turned her into one of the industry’s most sought-after leading ladies.
Bollywood came calling in 2016 when she starred opposite Hrithik Roshan in Mohenjo Daro, followed by the box-office hit Housefull 4 (2019), proving she could comfortably juggle multiple film industries without breaking a sweat.
Meanwhile, her Telugu career continued to soar with commercially successful films including Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018), Maharshi (2019), and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020), the last of which earned her the SIIMA Award for Best Actress – Telugu. She picked up another SIIMA Award with Most Eligible Bachelor (2021), then returned to Tamil cinema with the hit films Beast (2022) opposite Vijay and Retro (2025) opposite Suriya, where her performance drew widespread praise. At this point, the only thing moving faster than Pooja’s career might be her filming calendar.
Her Early Life
Pooja Hegde was born on October 13, 1990, and raised in Mumbai, Maharashtra, in a Tulu-speaking Bunt family with roots in Udupi, Karnataka. Achievement clearly runs in the family. Her father, Manjunath Hegde, is a criminal lawyer, while her mother, Latha Hegde, is an immunologist and entrepreneur. Her older brother, Rishabh Hegde, is an orthopaedic surgeon, making family dinners sound like they could double as a legal, medical, and business conference.
Pooja grew up speaking Tulu and is also fluent in English, Hindi, Marathi, and Kannada. After launching a successful career in Telugu cinema, she added Telugu to the list as well. Although she was raised in Mumbai, she considers Bengaluru her hometown and continues to maintain strong ties to the city.
She attended Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School before earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree from M. M. K. College. Alongside her studies, she trained in classical dance and music, including Bharatanatyam—a skill that would later serve her well on the big screen.
Her path to show business began almost by chance. A Miss India representative spotted her at a college event and encouraged her to enter the pageant. Pooja competed in Miss India 2009 and, although she was eliminated early, she still walked away with the Miss India Talented 2009 title. Clearly, she wasn’t leaving empty-handed.
She returned even stronger in 2010, finishing as runner-up at Femina Miss India South while also winning the Miss India South Glamorous Hair 2010 title. Later that year, she placed second runner-up in the Miss Universe India pageant, firmly establishing herself as one of the country’s rising stars.
Interestingly, Pooja didn’t rush into acting. Over the next three years, she turned down offers from several major production houses before finally making her film debut in Mugamoodi (2012). The deciding vote came from her mother, whose advice convinced her to accept the role. As career guidance goes, that one worked out rather well.
Career Journey
Pooja Hegde’s journey into films began thanks to a few pageant photographs. Director Mysskin spotted the images and cast her opposite Jiiva in the Tamil superhero film Mugamoodi (2012). Landing the role was one thing—learning Tamil was another. To master her dialogue, Pooja wrote the lines in English and memorized them, helped along by the similarities between Tamil and her native Tulu. The effort paid off, earning her nominations for the SIIMA Award and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South.
In 2014, she expanded into Telugu cinema with the romantic comedy Oka Laila Kosam. Never one to take shortcuts, Pooja learned Telugu for the role and earned a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress – Telugu. The film was a commercial success, and she followed it up with Mukunda, starring opposite Varun Tej.
Bollywood soon came knocking. In 2016, she made her Hindi film debut opposite Hrithik Roshan in Ashutosh Gowariker’s historical epic Mohenjo Daro. She landed the role after Sunita Gowariker spotted her in an advertisement and invited her to audition. The following year, Pooja teamed up with Allu Arjun for the action-comedy DJ: Duvvada Jagannadham. The film became one of Telugu cinema’s biggest hits of 2017, grossing more than ₹1.5 billion worldwide.
The momentum continued in 2018 with three Telugu releases. She first made a memorable appearance in the hit song Jigelu Rani from Rangasthalam, then starred in the fantasy action film Saakshyam. She wrapped up the year with Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava, dubbing her own dialogue for the first time. The blockbuster became the second-highest-grossing Telugu film of the year, earning more than ₹1.8 billion worldwide.
In 2019, Pooja starred opposite Mahesh Babu in Maharshi. Filming the song Elluvochi Godaramma in the middle of the Godavari River at Yanam came with an unexpected souvenir—sunburn. She later returned to Bollywood after a three-year break in the comedy hit Housefull 4, proving that sunscreen should probably be included in every movie budget.
The success only grew in 2020 with Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, where she reunited with Allu Arjun and director Trivikram Srinivas. Playing self-made entrepreneur Amulya, she also dazzled audiences with her performance in the song Butta Bomma, which became a sensation. The film broke records by becoming the first South Indian film to cross ₹2 billion net in a single language and went on to gross more than ₹2.8 billion worldwide.
In 2021, Pooja starred in Most Eligible Bachelor as a stand-up comedian. To prepare, she spent time with professional comedians to understand how they craft jokes and deliver punchlines. The research clearly worked, as her performance earned positive reviews and another SIIMA Award for Best Actress – Telugu.
The following year was one of her busiest. She starred opposite Prabhas in the multilingual romance Radhe Shyam, which opened strongly at the box office but ultimately fell short of recovering its massive budget. She then appeared opposite Vijay in the Tamil action-comedy Beast, took on a supporting role in Acharya alongside Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan, and rounded out 2022 with the Hindi comedy-drama Cirkus, opposite Ranveer Singh.
In 2023, Pooja starred in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, playing a Telugu woman whose arrival changes the life of Salman Khan’s protective and solitary character. Although the film underperformed commercially, she continued to add another major title to her growing filmography.
After taking a year away from the big screen, Pooja returned in 2025 with a busy slate of projects. She played journalist Diya in the Hindi action thriller Deva, followed by the role of veterinarian Rukmini opposite Suriya in the Tamil film Retro, where her performance received praise. She also made a special appearance in Rajinikanth’s Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Her glamorous dance number Monica quickly became a fan favorite—even earning compliments from Italian actress Monica Bellucci.
The performance, however, wasn’t nearly as effortless as it looked. Filmed in intense heat, humidity, and dust at a port, the demanding sequence left Pooja with sunburns, blisters, and tan lines that refused to clock out. It also marked her first major dance performance after recovering from a ligament tear. To make things even more challenging, part of the shoot took place on Maha Shivaratri, when she performed while fasting. Safe to say, that routine required far more than simply remembering the choreography.
