Iliza Shlesinger has built a career making audiences laugh, but her sharp wit is only part of the package. She’s effortlessly gorgeous, endlessly charismatic, and has the kind of confidence that lights up every stage she steps onto. Iliza Shlesinger has never been content with making people laugh in just one place. The American comedian has built an impressive career as a stand-up performer, actress, and television host, proving that a microphone is only the beginning of her talents.
Her breakthrough came in 2008 when she won NBC’s Last Comic Standing, a victory that launched her into the comedy spotlight. Since then, she’s released six Netflix comedy specials, hosted the syndicated dating show Excused from 2011 to 2013, and even took the reins of the TBS game show Separation Anxiety. Apparently, keeping audiences entertained is simply part of her job description.
In 2017, Shlesinger added late-night host to her résumé with Truth & Iliza on Freeform, before bringing her signature brand of humor to The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show, which premiered on Netflix in April 2020. Whether she’s delivering stand-up, acting in sketches, or hosting a show, one thing remains constant: Iliza always seems to have the last laugh.
Her Early Life
Iliza Vie Shlesinger was born on February 22, 1983, in New York City to a Jewish family. While the Big Apple was her birthplace, she was raised in Dallas, Texas, after her family relocated when she was still a baby. So, she may have started life as a New Yorker, but Texas is where she found her voice—and eventually, her punchlines.
She attended the private Greenhill School in Addison, where she studied Spanish and joined the school’s improvisation team. Looking back, improv was probably the perfect training ground for someone who would go on to make a living thinking on her feet and making audiences laugh.
After high school, Shlesinger spent a year at the University of Kansas and even took part in the Semester at Sea program, proving that classrooms don’t always need four walls. She later transferred to Emerson College in Boston, where she majored in film and joined the campus comedy sketch group, Jimmy’s Traveling All Stars. It turned out to be a smart move—because once comedy entered the picture, there was really no turning back.
Career Journey
After graduating from Emerson College, Iliza Shlesinger packed her bags, headed to Los Angeles, and set out to conquer the stand-up comedy scene. Before long, she was performing with ComedySportz Dallas and sharpening the quick-thinking style that would become her trademark.
Her first big break arrived in 2007 when she won Myspace’s So You Think You’re Funny contest and was named the G4 network’s Myspace Girl of the Week. Yes, Myspace was still a thing—and yes, it helped launch careers. A year later, Shlesinger made television history by becoming both the first woman and the youngest comedian to win the sixth season of NBC’s Last Comic Standing. She survived every head-to-head elimination thrown her way, joined the show’s national tour, and, at just 25 years old, was already headlining her own comedy shows.
Success opened plenty of new doors. She teamed up with Lewis Black for the History Channel holiday special Surviving the Holidays, narrated the 2009 documentary Imagine It!²: The Power of Imagination, and in 2010 released her stand-up special Man Up and Act Like a Lady along with the comedy album iliza LIVE. Around the same time, she also appeared in a series of business-themed comedy videos for Slate, proving that even office life could become comedy material.
Television soon became another playground for her humor. From 2007 to 2012, she hosted The Weakly News on TheStream.tv, followed by hosting the syndicated dating competition series Excused from 2011 to 2013. She also appeared in the 2013 film Paradise. In 2014, she launched the advice podcast Truth and Iliza, where celebrity guests and friends joined her to discuss life’s everyday annoyances with plenty of laughs along the way. By April 2023, the podcast was still going strong.
Shlesinger continued expanding her résumé in 2016. She joined Neil deGrasse Tyson as the comic co-host of StarTalk Radio for an episode of Cosmic Queries, then created, wrote, executive produced, and starred in the digital comedy series Forever 31. Apparently, if she wanted a project done exactly right, she simply did all the jobs herself.
That same year, Freeform began developing her late-night talk show, Truth & Iliza, which premiered on May 2, 2017. Although it ran for just six episodes, it gave audiences another chance to enjoy her fast-paced humor in a late-night format.
Not every chapter of her career happened onstage. In March 2024, Shlesinger successfully pursued legal action through New Zealand’s Auckland High Court to recover money owed to her by the production company Stripe Studios (Comedy), which was subsequently placed into liquidation. Its parent company, Stripe Media Group, also entered liquidation while owing substantial debts to creditors and performers, including David Hasselhoff.
Fortunately, the story had a happier ending. The cooking and comedy series she developed with her husband, chef Noah Galuten, was rescued by a different production company and finally premiered in 2026 as This Tastes Funny with Iliza Shlesinger on SBS Food. After all, if there’s one thing Iliza has consistently shown throughout her career, it’s that she knows how to turn setbacks into punchlines.
Headlines and Specials
If there’s one thing Iliza Shlesinger has mastered—besides making audiences laugh—it’s keeping her comedy specials coming. Since 2013, she’s built an impressive catalog that has made her one of stand-up’s most recognizable names.
Her first comedy special, War Paint, was recorded at The Lakewood Theater in her adopted hometown of Dallas on December 1, 2012, before premiering on Netflix on September 1, 2013. She kept the momentum going with Freezing Hot, recorded in Denver and released in January 2015, followed by Confirmed Kills, filmed at Chicago’s Vic Theatre and released on Netflix in September 2016.
In 2018, Shlesinger took things to an unusually historic venue by recording Elder Millennial aboard the USS Hornet at the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum in Alameda, California. Most comedians settle for a theater—Iliza performed on an aircraft carrier. Naturally. The special premiered on Netflix in July 2018, and she returned the following year with Unveiled, recorded in Nashville and released in November 2019.
Her talents extend well beyond stand-up. In 2020, she appeared in Netflix’s action-comedy Spenser Confidential and debuted The Iliza Shlesinger Sketch Show, giving fans another opportunity to enjoy her fast-paced style of comedy. That same year, she also portrayed Anita Weiss in the acclaimed drama Pieces of a Woman, showing she could handle dramatic roles just as confidently as comedic ones.
In 2021, Shlesinger wore several hats at once by starring in, writing, and executive producing the romantic comedy Good on Paper. Inspired by a real-life experience with a former boyfriend, the Netflix film proved that sometimes life’s most frustrating moments eventually become your best material.
She returned to stand-up in October 2022 with her sixth Netflix special, Hot Forever, continuing a comedy partnership that had already produced a string of fan favorites.
By 2025, Shlesinger was ready for a new chapter. Her first comedy special for Amazon Prime Video, A Different Animal, was recorded at Salt Lake City’s Eccles Theater and premiered on March 11. Introduced as the first installment in a new series for the streaming platform, it showed that after years of success, Iliza still wasn’t running out of stories—or punchlines.

Iliza Shlesinger’s career has stretched far beyond the stand-up stage. Over the years, she has appeared on a wide range of television programs, including E! Network’s Forbes Celebrity 100, TV Guide’s America’s Next Top Producer, Comedy Central Presents, John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show, Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed, and the History Channel’s History of a Joke. She even hosted her own show on GOTV’s mobile network, proving that if there’s a screen available, chances are Iliza can make people laugh on it.
In addition to performing, Shlesinger has found success as an author. Her first book, Girl Logic: The Genius and the Absurdity, was published by Weinstein Books on November 7, 2017, featuring an introduction by Mayim Bialik. She followed it up with All Things Aside: Absolutely Correct Opinions, released on October 11, 2022. The title alone gives a pretty good idea of the humor waiting inside.
Shlesinger has also been outspoken about issues she cares about. She describes herself as politically liberal and has publicly voiced support for abortion rights, transgender rights, and the Black Lives Matter movement. She is also a vocal supporter of Israel. Following the October 7, 2023 attacks, she signed an open letter from Creative Community for Peace expressing support for the country, later wrote an opinion piece for The Hollywood Reporter addressing the rise in antisemitism, and in January 2024 joined Chelsea Handler and Mayim Bialik in leading a fundraiser for United Hatzalah of Israel.
Not every headline has involved comedy. In December 2017, it was reported that Shlesinger was sued by a man who had been denied admission to one of her women-only comedy shows. The original complaint was dismissed before being refiled as a class-action lawsuit (Pollister v. Shlesinger). A notice of settlement was filed by the plaintiff in March 2021, though the terms of any settlement were not publicly disclosed.
Away from the spotlight, Shlesinger has built a happy family life. She married chef Noah Galuten in a Jewish ceremony in Los Angeles on May 12, 2018. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2022 and a son in 2024. Between raising two children, writing books, filming shows, and touring as a comedian, it’s safe to say her calendar doesn’t get much downtime.
