Who is Sophia Thomalla?
Sophia is a German actress, model, and television presenter. She is well known for her portrayal of Nicole Schneider in the series Mountain Medic. She also won the title of Dancing Star 2010 on Let’s Dance with her partner Massimo Sinato.
Her Early Life
Sophia Thomalla was born in East Berlin, East Germany on October 6, 1989. She is the daughter of actress Simone Thomalla and André Vetters. She grew up in Berlin until she was seven and moved to Cologne with her mother. After completing her fourth year of school, she and her mother moved to Kleinmachnow, then to Gelsenkirchen a year later. Sophia also lived there after the separation of her mother from Rudi Assauer.
Like her mother, Sophia practiced kickboxing as a recreational sport; she also partook in some amateur fights.
Career Journey
Sophia studied at the Constantin School of Acting, Dance, and Singing in Bochum from 2007 to 2009. In 2006, she made her television debut as the daughter of Barbara Rudnik and Henry Hübchen in the ARD criminal series Commissario Laurenti, directed by Sigi Rothemund.
In 2009, she applied for an open casting call for Germany’s Next Topmodel. Also in 2009 and 2010, she co-starred with Chris Putzer in the Sat.1 daily soap Eine wie Keine (“One Like No Other”). She competed in Let’s Dance and went on to win the title of Dancing Star 2010 with her dance partner Massimo Sinató.
In 2010, she was placed third on FHM’s Sexiest Women list. Sophia, like her mother, was photographed for the German edition of Playboy, which was published in May 2012. Thomalla was voted first in the online poll of Die 25 Schönsten Stars in 25 Jahren (“The 25 Most Beautiful Stars in 25 Years”). Sophia appeared in the October 2015 issue of Playboy alongside her mother and 23 other women.
Sophia joined the cast of Sat.1’s comedy series Die Dreisten Drei in 2012, alongside Oliver Beerhenke and Mirco Nontschew.
She modeled for the discounter Lidl’s beauty goods line in 2014, then for its apparel brand the following year. She took on extra hosting duties at the Wok World Cup, which aired on ProSieben in March, and at the TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge, which aired in October 2015. Sophia and Gunther Emmerlich co-hosted the 10th SemperOpernball in Dresden on January 30, 2015. She featured on the conversation show Hart Aber Fair (“Tough but Fair”) on March 2, 2015, which addressed the issue of gender equality. Her appearance on the show drew harsh criticism.
Sophia was on the RTL dancing show Dance Dance Dance’s jury in 2016. Later that year, she was on the jury for the tattoo competition Pain & Fame on Sixx, which featured the greatest tattoo artists in Germany. She released a shoe collection in September 2016.
Controversies
In December 2017, there was backlash over an advertising image for a gambling company… Sophia was barely dressed and bound to a cross. The photo was attacked by the President of the Central Committee of German Catholics and the Cultural Commissioner of the Evangelical Church.
“I think the campaign is an insult to the actual rape victims,” Sophia stated on the talk show Maischberger on the #MeToo movement. These occurrences and other statements against the #MeToo campaign sparked criticism.
Facts and Trivia
Sophia dated Rammstein singer Till Lindemann from April 2011 to November 2015. On March 11, 2016, she married Norwegian singer Andy LaPlegua in Marietta, Georgia. In May 2017, she announced their divorce. From 2017 until 2018 Thomalla was in a relationship with British musician Gavin Rossdale. In March 2019 she began dating German goalkeeper Loris Karius with whom she later moved to Istanbul, Turkey, where he was playing football. Since 2021 Thomalla is dating German tennis player Alexander Zverev.
Sophia’s favorite hobby is kickboxing.
She has been a supporter of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) political party since 2012.
