She went on to become one of the Philippines’ best-selling artists of the 2010s, earning the distinction of being the youngest recipient of the Diamond Record Award from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry. Beyond music, Julie Anne has also made her mark on television. She appeared in family and drama series like Buena Familia (2015–2016) and the remake of Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa (2017). Her most celebrated role to date came with Maria Clara at Ibarra (2022–2023), a primetime drama inspired by José Rizal’s classic novel Noli Me Tángere. In the series, she portrayed the iconic character Maria Clara, earning praise for her nuanced performance.
Her Early Life
Julie Anne Peñaflorida San Jose was born on May 17, 1994, at San Bernardino Hospital in Novaliches, Quezon City, Philippines. She is the eldest of four children of Jonathan Roque San Jose, a computer operator from Manila, and Marivic Camzon Peñaflorida, an instructor from Marinduque.
She began her schooling at Our Lady of Pagkabuhay Parochial School before transferring to Sto. Niño de Novaliches School. Later, she pursued higher education at UST Angelicum College, where she earned a degree in Communication Arts and officially graduated in 2016.
Career Journey
Julie Anne San Jose showed signs of stardom before she could even tie her shoelaces. At just two and a half, she was already belting out Donna Cruz’s Habang May Buhay. By the time she turned three, her mom had her enrolled at the Center for Pop Music, and that same year, she made her first TV appearance on the beloved children’s show Batibot.
In 1998, she started testing her charm on a bigger stage, joining Eat Bulaga!’s Little Miss Philippines, where she finished first runner-up. Not stopping there, she tried her luck on Magandang Tanghali Bayan’s Munting Miss U and placed third runner-up. Soon after, she was sharing screen time with no less than Sharon Cuneta in a TV commercial.
Still, Julie Anne didn’t rush headfirst into showbiz. It wasn’t until 2005 that she dove in, competing on the QTV (now GTV) singing show Popstar Kids. Though she didn’t win the grand prize, she became part of Sugarpop, the spin-off singing group formed from the show’s finalists. Together, they released two albums (Sugar Pop and Sugar Pop Repackaged), hosted their own kiddie program Planet Q, and performed weekly on GMA’s variety show SOP.
Julie Anne also began lending her voice to soundtracks for Kapuso dramas, and in November 2008, she sang “Awit ng Puso,” the GMA Christmas Station ID anthem composed by Simon Peter Tan. That same year, she made her acting debut in the afternoon soap Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan?.
When SOP wrapped up in 2010, Julie Anne carried on with its successor, Party Pilipinas. This was where her versatility really shone, with singing, dancing, and acting all rolled into her performances. Around this time, a video of her singing Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass went viral on YouTube, catapulting her into the spotlight as one of GMA’s most promising young stars.
By 2012, she was no longer just a rising talent—she was making headlines. Julie Anne was named one of the “Top 10 Women to Watch” by the Women Leaders’ Centre in partnership with Arc Media Global, and she landed on the list of the “New Breed of Stars to Watch Out For.”
From a toddler with a microphone to a certified star, Julie Anne’s journey was already proving that she was in it for the long run.
Fast forward to 2019, and Julie Anne was on a roll. She picked up two trophies at the Wish Music Awards and renewed her contract with Universal Records Philippines. Around the same time, her heartfelt rendition of Your Song racked up over seven million streams on Spotify—proof that fans couldn’t get enough of her music.
That May, Artist Center named her “Artist of the Month,” spotlighting her in a string of digital features to celebrate her birthday. Onstage, she kept busy too, headlining a successful run of Studio7 Musikalye concerts around Manila, followed by a show-stopping Kapuso concert in Dagupan. Not long after, she became a regular on the musical variety program Studio 7, which eventually took her all the way to Brooklyn, New York, for Kapusong Pinoy Studio 7 Musikalye sa Brooklyn—bringing a taste of home to Kapuso fans abroad.
Facts and Trivia
Julie Anne showed off a new, confident side when she “embraced womanhood” as PEP magazine’s July Covergirl—a look that fans couldn’t stop raving about.
But it’s not just about the glam for her. Julie Anne proudly serves as a Junior Ambassador for the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-Aawit (OPM), helping spread the love for Filipino music. She’s also a celebrity advocate for World Vision, supporting children’s rights, education, and well-being. To top it all off, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) named her one of its newest music ambassadors and even handed her a plaque of recognition—because yes, she’s that official.
She’s also been refreshingly open about mental health and the importance of self-care, proving that even superstars know the value of slowing down and looking after yourself.
Of course, her personal life has also been in the spotlight. Julie Anne once dated actor Benjamin Alves, and after two years, the two went their separate ways. Then came Rayver Cruz. The pair first crossed paths in 2018 when Rayver joined GMA Network. They started off as best friends, but while working together on The Clash, friendship slowly turned into something sweeter. By 2022, Julie Anne confirmed they were officially a couple—and let’s just say Rayver isn’t shy about where he wants things to go. He’s already revealed plans to marry her, and Julie Anne has admitted she’s open to settling down with him. Talk about a love story fans are rooting for.
