Originally from Ottawa, Canada, Jeanette Jenkins packed up and moved to Los Angeles in 1997 with a very specific goal: to become a fitness coach. No pressure, just moving to a new city and attempting to build a career in one of the most competitive fitness markets on the planet.
Years of hard work later, Jenkins had turned that ambition into a serious reputation, establishing herself as one of the world’s top fitness coaches. Apparently, the whole “move to L.A. and chase your dream” thing actually worked out pretty well for her.
Who is Jeanette Jenkins
Jeanette Jenkins is an American fitness trainer, author, and the founder of The Hollywood Trainer, a company that provides fitness programs and personal coaching for athletes, artists, and entertainers. She is also the author of The Hollywood Trainer Weight-Loss Plan: 21 Days to Make Healthy Living a Lifetime Habit, along with various programs focused on exercise and healthy eating.
Jenkins has taken her fitness expertise to social media as well, appearing in workout and training videos across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Basically, wherever people are looking for an excuse to get off the couch, Jenkins is there to make sure they don’t find one.
Her Early Life
Jeanette Jenkins was born in Hollywood, California, but grew up in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa in 1997, setting the foundation for the fitness career that would follow.
Jenkins has collected certifications across a rather impressive list of disciplines, including nutrition, weight training, kickboxing, Pilates, yoga, and metabolic testing. Basically, if there’s a way to make your muscles question their life choices, Jenkins probably knows how to teach it.
She now lives and works in Los Angeles, California, where she continues her career as a fitness trainer.
Career Journey
Jeanette Jenkins began her fitness career as a trainer for her university’s men’s football team, where she worked with athletes on sports injuries. After earning her degree from the University of Ottawa in 1997, she moved to Los Angeles and began teaching fitness classes. She eventually founded her own company, The Hollywood Trainer LLC, turning her passion for fitness into a full-fledged career.
Jenkins also made an early television appearance in 2001, competing on Season 1, Episode 3 of Fear Factor, titled “Jet Ski to Helicopter/Eat Beetles/Rope Crawl.” The episode aired on June 25, 2001. Apparently, getting people into shape wasn’t quite enough—she also had to prove she could survive Fear Factor.
Over the years, Jenkins has worked as a personal trainer for numerous high-profile artists, including Pink, Kelly Rowland, Alicia Keys, and Tracee Ellis Ross. She has also collaborated with Jurnee Smollett and Nia Long and worked as a trainer for Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson.
Her approach to training includes tracking body-fat percentage through methods such as bioelectrical impedance and skinfold calipers. Through The Hollywood Trainer Club, she has offered programs including the 30-Day Butt Challenge, 10-Day Ab Blast Challenge, and Bikini Bootcamp—because apparently one challenge at a time would be too easy.
Since 2007, Jenkins has expanded her fitness work into publishing and instructional media, releasing a book and creating a series of workout videos that have been translated into 12 languages. She also launched The Hollywood Trainer Club online, providing fitness and healthy-lifestyle content to a broader audience.
Jenkins has regularly appeared as a fitness and wellness expert on television and in publications, including Good Morning America, ABC News, and People. She has also returned to the University of Ottawa, her alma mater, to share her expertise.
A strong advocate for modern approaches to health and wellness, Jenkins has encouraged greater representation of people of color within the fitness industry. She has also embraced social media as a way to make workouts more accessible, creating fitness challenges across platforms including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.
In 2020, her “600 Calories in 60 Minutes Challenge”, a cardio-sculpting kickboxing workout posted on TikTok, became a viral hit and accumulated more than 15 million views. Not exactly the sort of video you watch while comfortably eating chips on the couch—unless you’re prepared for some serious guilt.
Facts and Trivia
Jeanette Jenkins has worked with some of the biggest names in fitness and wellness. She also co-created Apple’s Health and Fitness Walk program with Jay Blahnik, giving people yet another reason to stop treating their daily steps as optional.
