At the beginning of every year, there is a lull in Sporting Events. Football season has just ended and Baseball season hasn’t quite began yet. People are starting to get sick of winter and are looking forward to summer. Because of a lack of good sporting stories and after a long cold winter in 1964, Sports Illustrated decided to have an edition that would help its readers get ready for the spring/summer seasons and they published their first Swimsuit Edition.
The 1964 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition featured Babette March on the cover. It was so successful that Sports Illustrated ended up making it a yearly event.
The magazine continued to have sports in the edition up until 1997 when they decided the Swimsuit Edition would be exclusively dedicated to swimsuits.
